Burn conversion, cockpit rim

Any full grown people (6'+) out there converted a Burn?

I looked at one over the weekend and was thinking of picking one up but the cockpit rim seems real narrow, I had an H3 in the past and had to do some heat gun and car jack work with it and was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with it.

Also any full grown folks convert a Critical Mass yet, I like the looks of the boat but I can get a new Burn cheaper than a blank CM so I'd rather go that route.

I believe the rim is the same width as the H3 but just a little longer.

i trim the extra plastic off, no other radical mods...i have an h3 also and i think it's exactly the same.

i'm 6-1 178lbs

i have about 1.5 inches of hip pad on each side

The burn seems like it would make a great creek boat. If you are questioning the cockpit rim. Ask if the seller would mind if you pulled out the kayak seat and kneeled in the boat. I seriously dought that the rim would be too low. If you are finding it so i would bet you have your seat set way to high. I had a friend that would loan me his open boat for seal launches off that big boulder on the lower yough and always found it comprable to sittin with the empire state building jambed under my butt. ( the seat height not the rock silly). But that is where my friend liked his seat height. 9 1/2" me i was always more of 6" to 8" myself. The lower you are the more stable you . specialy in creek boats is that important . Run thinner knee padding to lower knees and thin ankle suport as well to limit the binding behind your knees. Shoot i bet if i converted a burn i probably woulndn,t want for another creek boat till i wore it out . Then i would just get another burn. Great boat . syotr JIM

I'm going to pick up a Burn after work, the boat shop down here has one with the old outfitting so the price was nicer.

It's where my legs spread out that I have the problem with the rim, my old H3 had a 7" saddle and the rim would leave my thighs nice and black with bruises after paddling it for a day. I'll have to trim the plastic back with the new way they are doing the rims now but I'm looking forward to it....kinda wish I hadn't of gotten the Flirt a while back.

I just replaced my old cruise control = high rim with a godzilla =lower rim. I had the same initial outfitting problem . So i did a bulkhead outfitting and with controling the thighs am able to keep my quads from being mushed by the rim and lock my knees down realy well. Have a 7 1/2" seat height 6" of back rest. If you measure from the tip of my knees i have 6" of coverage there too. I love this boat now . Every one thought the godzilla was a round boat but it has very nice edges . Just wish it had a climbing bow for resurfaceing. Thats where the burn will excell plus the burn has more volume in the stern too. I haven,t been back endered yet but i am sure the godzilla will have that tendency. If you run steep creeks i bet you will love the boat. Would love to meet ya for the upper yough this summer and switch boats for a run down or 2 JIM

I THINK that the cockpit rim on the burn is significantly higher than on the H-3. If you look at Leland's review http://www.rivergypsies.com/burn.html about halfway down, there's a side view comparison of the two boats. With the new way the cockpit rims are molded, you'll probably get an extra inch (+/-) or so of width on the inside of the cockpit rim (except where the thighbraces mount, which will be about the same. I think you'll end up finding the Burn a good bit roomier that the H:3. Let me know how it works out for you.

i just measured both boats and they are VERY close to the same.

i also noticed that if my saddle was higher my thighs would be jammed against the cockpit, so there you go..just lower your saddle if your thighs hit. mine is 6 1/2"
