initial thoughts Robson`s new open boat

Post by James »

Tried out Robson`s new rodeo OC 1 last night on the local wave for a quick ride. Really didn`t spend long in it. Definitely loose, super easy to spin. And stable too, the thing is quite wide. Hull speed on the small, slow wave I tried was not bad, but definitely slower than my tekno, so no speed demon here. Stayed fairly dry too. Because of the width of the boat, takes a little getting used to going from edge to edge to carve.

Definitely fun, definitely very silly looking to be as polite as possible. If you are a dedicated open boater who wants to do the latest rodeo moves, this is the only boat that will get you there. But for me I have to ask "why bother", as it doesn't look like an open canoe, it doesn't paddle like an open canoe, and a C1 playboat is way more responsive and fun. But if you are looking to be different, no problem!

It was fun to paddle, and has been designed to do some serious moves. Could do some lame flatwater cartwheels at 175lbs, and thought with some practice I could learn to bowstall it.

Five minutes of fun for 15 minutes of FROZEN feet, it is dam cold paddling an open boat in April in Canada!

I had a chance to give it a try at pool paddling a couple weeks ago, im only 155lbs 6ft, and it was a little big for me. I coule double pump the front and could barly get some low angle cartwheels in. I would love to bring it out on a way and goof around. Kalin, had treid it and could cartwheel it way better than me. It made you think twice, cause you were like cartwheeling an Open boat? how funky is that. Id like too see how it handles in whitewater.
I find myslef asking the question why? ike why not just C1. But being a OC1 paddler too, it just something different, i found it even more extremly different that a quake or aftershock,

I was paddling with a friend of mine this weekend who has got himself a CU-Fly. The boat was surprisingly fast on the river, for something that looks like it is wider than it is long. He paddled everything we did (mostly III's) and while it looked like it was harder for him to hit some waves, I've never seen anybody manage vertical moves on an eddyline in a Rival. It does seem like the boat should be paddled like a C1 instead of an open canoe (like try to follow the guy in the Pop as opposed to trying to convince yourself you have the hull speed of the guy in the Rival). As far as I can see, the big advatnage of the CU-Fly over a C1 is that you are amphibious. You don't have to mess around with your skirt at the put in, and if you miss a play feature, it''s pretty easy to hop out and pull back up.

How high is the saddle?

Post by C1Deli »

So how high is the saddle?

Is it 8" like a Spanish Fly?

or is it 5.5 or 6" like a playboat?

From what I recall, the seat height is fairly high, canoe style rather than C1 style. ankles don't have to be flexed all the way over, you use footpegs instead to push against into the bulkhead. This thing is wide by the way, which makes it pretty stable, the seat height was not an issue in the limited little spin I took it for. Once full of water it was pretty amusing in terms of trying to get to shore, but hey, its a canoe, right? I agree with Kev, this is a different creature even than the aftershock, quake etc. Super loose on a wave (wants to spin), quite playful. Awwww, now it is kinda growing on me...

The saddle is 10 inches high. You can, however, lower it to whatever you want by removing the foam :D
