From a trade journal we get here at my workplace... http://www.snapon.com/techmagazine/pdf/ ... Fall07.pdf

I laughed out loud so hard... that I might have even pee'd a little bit.

I think I just did pee myself. That is TOO funny. I guess it makes sense that a Snap-On publication would feature a pair of tools on the cover :).

It's quite obvious - they have forgotten to bring along a model from the Snap-On Calendar.

Scott, your comment is spot on! If they had a model from the Snap-On calendar on board, then they wouldn't be looking at the drop and they would have been too distracted to have grabbed the gunwales.

he's stabilizing the boat so it don't tip over. Maybe something they learned in the paddling instructional video 'Deliverance'. At least the guy in the bow is getting a picture of it.

What do you mean "doing wrong"? What? What?

I agree with Scott - They need a tandem with the tool models! :-)

I guess my kids have heard me say that grabbing the gunnels is like letting go of your steering wheel if you lose control of your car.

The other day when I let go of the steering wheel to stretch, my 6 year old daughter yelled out "Dad, you're grabbing the gunnels."

Was renting a jackhammer at Sunbelt Rentals last week and saw this issue on the counter. Just about peed my self too but with all those rugged construction types around was able to control me wee self.
Awesome post.

I agree with PAC.............What are they doing wrong? I know it is the Chatooga<read>, not sure what drop it is but I know the first time I ran Dick's Creek I looked somewhat like this. Second Ledge as well if I recall correctly. Good thing I was boating with a bunch of "K" boaters from Wisconsin who didn't know any better!............Also agree with Craig, we gotta find these guys who print this stuff and put a stop to it......................... Here's what is happenning that's wrong:

Stern:
1. Grabbing gunnels
2. Sitting not kneeling
3. Wrong time to take a crap (as indicated by the effort on his face)
4. No hand on paddle

Bow:
1. Only one hand on the paddle - MADNESS!

Boat Outfitting:
1. No thigh straps
2. No float bags in bow/stern
3. Painters poorly secured

General:

One billy-bob in the boat = bad news
Two billy-bobs: SQUEAL LIKE A PIG time!

Hey Mike,
They're grabbing the gunnels to lessen their impact... great reply to POBO's posting. Very witty.

It's the river right side of Big Shoals on section 2. If you look on page 11 of the PDF (page 20 of the magazine), there's a shot from a few seconds before the 'cover' moment.

After I got done laughing and shaking my head, it occurred to me they did do a few things right:

- wore PFDs and helmets
- had safety boaters for the part of section 3 that they ran
- paddled open boats
