Raising the RIM on a yakversion
Hej,
Just ripped out the useless bits in the Y so that I can put a seat in.
I tried kneeling in it, and my knees are spread about 6" apart when I'm kneeling on a seat that's about 8" high... My mother always said i was big boned.
I want to raise the rim. Read the outfitting page:
http://www.cboats.net/outfitting/spacerim.php
But it doesnt make too much sense. Anyone done this? Do I just raise the entire rim evenly, jack it up and go slowly around it with a heat gun?
Can I head and lift the rim only at the front, provided i keep the same general shape? Ideas apreciated.
Mike

pre heating helps
If you don't have an oven that big put it out in the direct sun on a 95 degree day and fill the whole thing with 74 gallon of boiling hot water before usin the heat gun. If you are going to use the knees under the coxpit rim method or plan to be in the boat while usin the heat gun.....remove the boiling water first.
One side at a time makes sense fo sho.
Where the hades am i gonna find a 95 degree day in Ottawa?! I don't even know what that is in Celcius! I'll wear my drysuit for the boiling water though, that should keep the scald factor down. Also will require less volume.
... wait a minute!@! That's a Louie post! arrrrrghhh Louie, why dont you EDITED BY ADMIN

Hi m,
I' too am graced with powerful thighs, and I had to jack the rim of my WS Score. I did a hack version of what's suggested on the outfitting page, mostly because the outfitting was already in the boat, so where I could put the jack & wood was limited by the saddle and rail.
I used a jack and a sheet of wood that just extended where needed for my thighs (not a full-on elaborate form). I also used some minicell bits as shims for the different height of the rim. Heat and raise, and then let sit/cool, with the jack & wood still in, for as long as you can.
As the bulkhead was already in from the previous owner/outfitting, I also cut a hockey-stick thwart to add between the bulkhead and the rim. I had no buckling on the sides, never even thought of that. My only concern was whether I'd mess with the rim in terms of accepting the kilt, but had no problems with that either.
So, whether you use a jack & wood or your thighs & a towel (probably depends on how much space you need to create), just give'r, it works.

It's makin my head hurt, this outfitting thing!
I just did a hack job at raising the rim, bunch a wood, car jack, towel and pushed'r up, cooled it off with water after I raised it. Can always go more if I need to.
Got the seat built, doin' a fence-rail thingy, not quite as elaborate as the one on the page here, but it's starting to come together. Gonna use a lap belt instead of thigh straps for now, mainly because I have it here, and I've never really had much luck w/ thigh straps staying in the c1.
I also made huge ankle blocks, what a difference! It's So much more comfortable than the half-inch blocks I have in my super-fun! I might actually be able to stay in this longer than 10 mins for a start
I'll post pix when i get'r done
