Brown Pack Systems used a "mil-spec pin and ring" system - I believe it may be similar to a strap release on the Alice (sp?) pack system used by the US military. I have pics here :

The only hard part of making similar might be finding the appropriately sized D-rings and the plastic pin part.

VW Style Straps

I'm using VW style straps in my Finkenmeister. Although they are heavier than most other systems, there is no chance of a hang-up. I have a line between the two straps covered in a short plastic tube. One pull of the cord and they both separate. The straps are 2 inches wide and quite comfortable. As for the weight, I don't even notice the latches. Price was about $35.

I'm setting ladder locks up in one boat, and hope to create a ball-and camlock style with East Coast Canoe's help.
I'll also create a "tied-together" camlock system, with a single pull, and see if that works. I really like that idea for the Mentor, actually.
Yes, I have no shortage of boats to mess around the outfitting with. Thankfully I have plenty of webbing (and unoutfitted boats that I've been meaning to put SOMETHING in, even if it's old Fastex buckles), and most of the plastic buckles seem fairly inexpensive (I've ordered some from Strapworks (link from the "Paddling Links" page), and I look forward to comparing what East Coast canoes comes up with!
The VW system in the Fink is SWEET Marc. It reminds me of the airplane buckle system I had in my original slasher...held me in better than anything...and was ridiculously uncomfortable (that was more the seat and postion than the straps though).
