Types of boaters

Kayaker bashing occurs frequently here. I'm curious how many cboaters have spent a large amount of time kayaking. I'd say large is more than a quarter of the time you are in a boat.

I said open boat almost always just because there was not a OC only box to check.

Open boat mostly. Still scared of my C-1, and it really hurts my legs. I tried kayaking once or twice in about 1993.

I'd say kayaker bashing occurs here by a select few of our thousand plus members - though many of us enjoy poking fun at kayakers (and our local kayakers enjoy poking fun at us), most of us realize that it doesn't really matter what you paddle - what matters is that you are out there on the water.

After all, Louie, has been known to insult a kayaker on occasion

, paddles with a documented double bladed duckiest!

(note that some of my fondest summer paddling has been done in a duck).

Open boat till it gets real hot and the water is low then it is time for the TORRENT. Glorified inner tube. Fun and Wet.

I've been in a kayak no more than twice in 28 years. Never paddled one more than a few minutes at a time. Just didn't appeal to me at all. Your poll needs a "Only paddle open boat" check box.

I have gone through phases where I almost exclusively open boated or almost exclusively C-1ed. I've kayaked some - I tried whitewater kayaking for about 4 months once but never got comfortable. I'd already been c-boating for a couple of years and felt like I was sitting too low and just couldn't get a good view or "grip" on things. I did get a roll and could even ender but just never really liked it. I do have a sea kayak and really do enjoy that in open water. However, if I could find a similar boat that allowed me to kneel, I'd be even happier...

C1 in the winter, OC1 in the warmer times. I find kneeling in cold water somewhat unpleasant.

And I'm too cheap to buy a dry suit. All I have to wear in the C1 (down to 20F) are poly long johns.

Until last August - OC 99%.

Then had my third blood clot below the knee (all three a day after boating). K1 and Shredder mostly since then. (Ok a little OC2 with mega doses of asprin). Just got back from Shredding the grand canyon - what a blast!

Can't see s8it from a K1 seat, ow I know why they hit holes and rocks so much. Raised one inch with foam, not much help. Got an OK roll - still needs a lot of work. I figure it beats golf or watching sports from a couch or strokin out from a clot.

Funny about the raised seat, had a kayaker notice once and ask me "isn't that unstable" I laughed and said "its 8 inches lower than my other one". Shoulda seen the look on his face then

I've had to paddle a couple of times after each knee surgery (3x). Frigging boring.
If I want to watch whitewater sitting on my butt, it'll be on the couch watching paddling porn.
Plus I still can't figure out how to roll one of those things - that training blade keeps getting in the way.

Back in the 70s and 80s, I was 50/50 open canoe and c-1. I was too tall for kayaks.

In 1990 I custom outfitted an old Noah kayak to fit me, and learned to roll it. But through the 90s I still paddled more difficult waters in c-1, and usually cruised easy waters in open boat.

As kneeling has gotten more difficult

, I've usually been paddling open boat, but after being blown off some rivers by high wind, am thinking of using my kayaks more often.

It cracks me up when a bunch of class II/III open boaters want to bag on kayakers because other people have the good sense to do something the easy way and you're stuck in a scene out of Deliverance co/starring Louie.

The only reason it seems like there are so many dumb kayakers is that there are so many more of them. I boat almost exclusively with butt boaters. I enjoy paddling with open canoes and drove more than half way across the country to do so last month. If I hadn't wanted to get on Caney Fork while the water was still good, I would have even got back in a bathtub for Tellico Tuesday.

When I move to TN where the rivers flow with shine and the rocks are made of cotton candy, I'll probably even get another canoe!
