bulkhead question

Post by Mike W. »

I made a bulkhead & put in the Big EZ tonight. It seems secure here in the yard (which is no indication as to how secure it'll be on the river). How are folks securing their bulkheads. Right now mine is just crammed in the boat.
Thanks,
Mike W.

bulkhead

Post by the great gonzo »

Mike, I would definitely glue it in once you are sure everything is in the right position. If it is crammed in fairly thight , then some good contact cement should hold it in well enough, or you could use 3M DP8005 or DP8010. Haven't used it myself, but NZMatt and SpaceCanoe recommend it (thanks guys).
Even if it may seem secure in the yard, once you are on the river it's a different story, and it's no fun to have to chase the outfitting of your boat down the river  after having been worked in a hole :o and fallen out, because the saddle and straps were not properly attached (been there, done that...).

I have just forced my bulkhead into my AMP. I have it so that I can pull it out and put my drybag, throw rope, camera etc up the front. I have never thorght about it falling out but now I think about it if I even do have to swim it may fall out. So what I am going to do is attach a pice of light rope to it and the front piller so I can still take it out but I will not be able to loose it.

WELL....

Hey, Mike!
Don't use the DP 8005 on your bulkhead; that's way too much time and effort! 3M does make a plastic adhesive, actually about three of them, and it's basically contact cement from hades. Applies like contact cement and holds even more strongly. The plastic adhesives are 4693, 4693H, and 4475

I used Scotch-Grip Plastic Adhesive 4693 by 3M. But be sure with this, because I don't think what you've glued in will come out easily, since it will bond so well. In fact, I had to pull some foam off of my cockpit because I was going to heat it and jack it up so that I could get under it easier, and I ended up leaving a very small section of foam on the boat. In other words, I pulled the foam off of the foam that remained attached to the glue, rather than the foam and glue off of the boat, so it sticks REALLY REALLY WELL.My advice would be to check with the 3M tech people and then spot-glue the bulkhead in so that you could remove it more easily if it needs future adjustments.
Hope this helps;

weldwood

Post by sbroam »

Heck, if you have a substantial contact foot print between your foam and hull, plain old Weldwood (red) contact cement should do it. It should be under that much stress pulling away from the boat, depending on your design. I'm thinking it would mostly be in shear or compression...

I've glued up some pretty significant structures (hip "couches", pedestals, knee blocks) with plain old Weldwood and not had any problems with it holding. The problems are with the pilot of the boat

it only slipped a little...

Post by Mike W. »

I paddled tonight & one side slipped about an inch. Still fine for rolling & playing though. I'm going to make it a bit thicker (it's 3" thick now).

Contact cement won't work with my design as it has to be shoved into place & with contact cement you must place the part being glued exactly where you want it. Actually I think (uh oh, everybody duck) that with the modifications that I have in mind it won't need glue.

This thing is super comfortable & keeps my legs where I want them. The thigh straps are coming out

Mike, where do you have time to paddle another boat? That Viper ought to keep you busy. I just got mine back from Kaz with a stiffer hip grapper setup. It has made a big difference on flatwater pivots. I can't wait to do some eddie line work.

till next

kind of slack this year

Post by Mike W. »

Hey Jim, I've been kind of slack. Today made only the 55th day that I've paddled this year. I've broken 100 days per year for the last 2 years. I won't make it this year. The river has been really high here all year long, so I've done a bunch of upstream paddling in fast flatwater instead of paddling a bunch of whitewater. I did manage to get to the OC downriver nationals this year though.

I haven't made hip grabbers for the Viper yet. I know that I need to do that because I end up turned a little to my onside after doing a bunch of stern-squirts. I also will make a bulkhead for it.
