Wondering if anybody has any tips for where to paddle and where to rent an open boat on Vancouver Island? I'm going to be out there the second half of August with my girlfiend - also an OC1-er - and we're curious about the possibilities...
Thanks!

Vancouver Island...where to rent an open boat?

The only canoe rental that I remember is in Port Alberni. Granted, I was only in Port Renfrew and Ucluelet, but I really wanted to boat around on the rivers, lakes, and in the ocean, and my Canuck friends would only rent me kayaks.
Hope you find an option, but when I was up there last year, canoes were slim pickings. All the good whitewater is up in Squamish anyways.

You could try MEC in Victoria but not sure wether they rent OC1's, or if you come through Vancouver call David at http://www.middletonsboats.com, because if he doesn't have something for you (he might) to take over to the island, he might be able to refer you to somebody who does, he knows a whole lot of people..
good luck!

tougher question : where to paddle
Assuming you can find a couple of oc-1s to rent, your next question is finding something to paddle on Vancouver Island in August. Things get pretty dry here by late summer.
Gold River may have water in it, but maybe not (as of today, not)
Campbell River is hardly worth the effort of renting the boats.
Nice hiking up at Mt Washington though....
