I guess they did it for you because it was coming from a paddle shop.
So in sum:
Forward Air: Cheap, friendly, accomodating
Old Dominion: "uh we don handle pers freh"
YRC: Friendly, more expensive
Greyhound, Sports Express: nothing over 80"
DHL: Only handles international
UPS: They will do it, but for 7-8x the money a freight co will do it for...or, if they like you, they'll do it for 50 bux ???
Mayflower: Minimum container size is 1200lbs
With YRC, like other freight forwarders, it's cheaper if you pick it up at the dock. It's also cheaper if you can have the shipper take it to the nearest YRC terminal, not too hard to do.

just for comparison, i'm having a c1 shipped from illinois on greyhound package express. its longest dimension is 79". the quote is about $80, so your $97 quote doesn't seem too bad. i should have my new boat next week!
In a canoe you don't just float down a river: you're part of it- a silent water creature responsive to every surge and flex of current, gliding like a fingertip over a naked green body. "The River Why" David James Duncan
What company did you end up shipping your boat with?
Still ongoing .
The problem is the seller is in a very small town and has been so far unable to get the canoe to a city with a freight dock. I just have to wait a couple more weeks and he'll be able to drop it off as part of an already planned trip. I'm using Forward Air and its costing me ~ $140. The original quote ($97) was using inaccurate measurements. Shipping directly out of his small town was going to be almost 3x as much.
If it helps, USAIR will allow you to check a canoe for $100 per direction. I looked into it for international flights, but should be the same for US if that helps. Just can't be an express flight.

agrestal,
Thanks! I'll give them a call. $100 would be very nice.

I bought a Pyranha Prelude. I used YRC and they are very friendly and easy to work with. The canoe is being shipped from Portland, ME to Boaz, AL for $150.69.
Also YRC will ship to and from a business address for the same price as shipping to and from their terminals.
