why do so many canoers have a giant chip on the shoulder?

Definitely not skills. not yet. Jeremy is right, I have a lot of work to do still. and always. But you're right... how impressed with myself i am, sets me apart. Also - my ping pong paddle($120) is more expensive that my canoeing paddle($80). I bet that sets me apart.Larry Horne wrote: what sets you apart is how impressed you are, with yourself. skills? not so much.

as for canoes being inferior... a canoer that paddles along side his kayaking peers, is a superior boater, whereas a kayaker, is inferior...
for instance... I/many could hop in a kayak tomorrow, apply WW concepts that were learned in an OB, and probably be able to paddle class IV smoothly, with a bombproof roll.... in a kayak...
A kayaker, could not do the same if they switched to an OB. Not a shot
...I love how a lot of the threads lately have turned into butt boat bashing. classic.

Wouldn't be so quick to make any of those last claims.
First I'm calling you out put your money where your mouth is you just said you could run class IV in a kayak smoothly so do it I bet it would be far from smooth especially since you can't run class IV smoothly in an OC1. If I ever see you on the river I'll be makin sure your arse gets in a kayak.
Second I've seen some kayakers get in an open boat and rip it right away
There is something to be said for experience and time in a boat no matter what the craft
Frankly I don't care how much you spout your mouth and yeah you work hard and are progressing good for you I don't really care about that much either.
I find it pretty humorous how these little pissing contests start online when alot of people have never actually met.
I still don't understand what you are trying to prove or what your goal is? So I know you want to fire up class V in your oc1, but whats your reason for it? are you trying to get sponsored? trying to post the best videos online? Just want to be able to talk more crap?
you are who you are and thats fine I don't really care don't think any less of you for it and if i didn't find most these posts funny i wouldn't come to this site or bt
There's a big difference between self promotion and putting others down to lift yourself up I think that in this sport you see the latter too much and thats where stuff like this comes in
I have another question McGnarlz: Do you where Tapout and affliction shirts?

No, No you couldn't, at the very least, you'd need to re-learn to boof (Neely didn't credit "some canoeist out west" with inventing the boof just because they were "hardcore").FullGnarlzOC wrote:for instance... I think you need to think more not only about what you say, but about how you say it... Now Louie comes out with some outragous things, but in most of his postings there's a thread of erudation, humour and honesty twinned with self-knowlege... So I'm able to identify with or at least tolerate pretty much everything he says...
Conversely you're coming across as somewhere between arrogance and self-inflation. My feelings toward you at the moment is along the lines of "I wouldn't accept someone jerking off onto my computer screen... so why should I have to deal with someone jerking off their ego and splattering there ego-jizz [in the form of log sticky unpleasant strands of words] all over the inside of it."
Learn a bit of fecking humility and you'll go a lot further!

No, I dont....BUTTTTT I did buy a 'Elite' MMA sweatshirt as I waited at the walmart to be picked up, realizing I had no warm gear.....and i bought it because it was camo, kinda sweet lookin, n $12.... for a sweatshirt... that's a deal.
I 'feel' that i could definitely paddle a yak through the UY(IV-V) without swimming. YOU HAVE A BRACE ON BOTH SIDES FOR F SAKES.... how hard could that really be? i mean come on. and it's not like 'messing up' a little bit, is going to cause me to get water in the thing...
my goal? I want to be one of the best paddlers in the world. And I honestly believe that goal more than just a pipe dream. Progression needs to be there at the rate it is to 'catch up'. And even though I'm runnin the sht, I have so much work to do. I did a week of steep creeking last week, for the first time and it opened up a whole new set of things to work on.
I've always said that paddle progression is very similar to a video game. Once you 'step up' to the next level, you unlock a whole new set of 'moves' and 'skills' to work on and 'upgrade'.
Now that I have 'unlocked' some new things to try...I'm starting to think things like bombproofing my ability to smash holes on my off-side, with a big sidewaysish angle... aka not near straight on. Or, using rocks to turn the boat...ect. Things that you don't think about until you need to do such things.

Look... I can sit back and blend in... or I can continue to be very 'involved' with what I do, and that crosses over into self-promotion, forum sqwauking, ect... I love makin videos, and editing them to music. that is as fun as boating is to me. And I definitely like sharing my 'progression'... for all I know, there are aspiring boaters(converted kayakers?!?), looking to push it to the next level, without having to put the time in for like 5+ years....they need to know... it can be done. and it probably has been done before. regardless... it's happening now. And I like sharing where im at, what im doing, and how im doing it. ON TOP of that... i like chiming in on other topics to add my .2cents, which may or may not be worth anything. just like everyone else does.. lol.
I would say i could tone it down a bit... but its just me man... hard to not be urself, and why try anything otherwise u know? i know how i can rub ppl the wrong way through the computer...it is what ti is. especially if they dont know me.
And Humility is hardly anything I have... sorry cricket.

I'm not saying don't be yourself, I'm saying learn the skills to be yourself without pissing everyone else round you off!
As for learning to get real good real fast, it's easy (and definately is the norm for "good" UK boaters) you just have get out lots with good boaters whilst you're in that phase where your basic paddling skills are solid, but you don't know enough to realise the risks you're taking. (I started paddling properly at 16ish, and I'm 20 now and happy on 4+ and probably capable of stepping it up and doing some 5 when I'm not running away like a scared little girl).
If you're struggling, I'm sure I could knock some humility into you with our house cricket bat, but fortunately for you that's reserved for killing rats and destroying broken household appliences...

im sure some river will knock some humility in me sooner or later... usually how things work. It's gonna have to do better than getting blown upside down into rocks, or getting munch in a hole for a lil bit.
Something bigger happens, and i might start slowing down. But as of right now... things feel good. Gotta keep firing it up....i mean, what else is there to do?!?

I'll be waiting for video evidence of this class IV kayak run!!!!!
I'm not saying you can't do it but back your large steaming pile of dog doo up.
Yes it is fun to step up to a new set of skills.
Since you run the large steaming pile of dog doo now I cordially invite you to the Green Narrows in NC your invitation includes a floor to sleep on, a guide down the river and beer oh and a video boater
12 dollars aint bad in a pinch but I'll stick to 5 at the thrift store

Mate, you admit that you've never paddled a kayak on whitewater in your fricking life, but you think you know more about it than the dozens of people here who have or do? I think I'll be confiscating that break from you, the rest of us need it more...FullGnarlzOC wrote:need to learn to 're-boof'.... give me a break. are you an athlete man?...jesus
Seriously, whilst the concept of boofing remains identical between kayaking and canoing, the actual movements made to do it are very much dissimilar (it's far and away easier in a canoe, because you're not fighting the weight of your legs, and you have the full range of movement in your hips and abs to pull up with, compared to half the range of movement in yoru abs alone if you're sat down). It's not a transferable skill, just a shared concept.
Seen as you go on and on about being "an athlete" you must have heard about "specific fitness" where you condition your body to do a specific sport... If you paddle a canoe at exclusion of all others, you won't have kayak specific fitness, your strokes will be weaker, your back will hurt and you'll tire far quicker than you will in a canoe, at least until you adjust.
For the record no I'm not an Athlete, (nor as any of my ex's would tell you an Aesthete). I'm a boater... I go boating, drink beer, eat far too much tasty food, drink whisky, and occasionally do something strenous like a bike ride or a bit of climbing.
Edit: Craig I hate you so very much right now, I'm viewing this on a smartphone and your endless two-faced kitten is making it a right ballache!

Cricket - you can do all those things and be an athlete still...college teaches you such things. Point being... if "someone" played all sorts of sports competivily, at a relatively high level - such things would transition over into the boating world... Things like weight control, strength, conditioning, and motor skills.
xmas - I just might do that for fun... maybe a rapid or two... but only if I can get the kayaker to agree to take my boat down the same rapids... I can only guess how the video would turn out.
As for the green gnarlz... ty very much for the invite. that's what im' looking for. I'm actually thinking about making my way down there for a week, following gauley fest, to run some laps on the gnarlz.
My short term goal for the year has been to enter the OC1 class for the Green, an idea that is laughable to some... but Im not laughing. alright... maybe a lil. But still that's the goal man. Only a small number of people do it, so it wouldnt be terribly hard to medal. Besides, just running the race at this point for me is glory. I hope you meant that... because I seriously might take you up on it. Especially if you know people that shave seconds.

alright. i gotta get some sleep - I'll find out where i am at pretty quickly come Sat on the Racquette. If that goes well... I'm smoothing somethings over before g-fest(UY runs the whole week), and afterward...Green Gnarlz here I come.
If i get my arse handed to me this weekend...well... we'll cross that bridge if i get there.
PS - this is all assuming I don't completely destroy the detonator this weekend.
