hand roll

I have a bombproof sushi hand roll. Other than that, I dont even have a paddle roll. Can roll a kayak, but anyone can do that...

But what could also be interesting is, can anyone roll without hands? The difference should not be that great.

And regarding the hand roll as a last line of defense, I wonder what you would do in such a situation where that actually is necessary without a paddle - would have to be paddling with a quickly accessible spare, wouldnt it? No two-piece under skirt or such..

I have rolled my super fly in a pool with hand paddles, a few times. A strong hip snap and keeping your head down is a must.

Learned last night I can roll the Taureau with hand paddles... Can't do much at all without hand paddles... Since I don't expect to hand-paddle-cboat, I don't think this gets me very far... /:(

I've seen a "no hands' roll performed by one paddler, but that was in a kayak. Sarah Douglas, who paddles with the Lehigh Valley Canoe Club in the Allentown, PA area, demonstrated the technique a couple of years ago when she was 11 or 12. She held her arms crossed on her chest and rolled her kayak entirely with hip snap and torso rotation. It was amazing to watch! Sarah is relatively small and in excellent shape, both from gymnastics as well as paddling.

Since then, Sarah has gotten involved in racing slalom, and just this year has added C-1W at some of the Class I races of the Penn Cup series. As she learns a C-1 roll, it will be interesting to see if her no hands kayak roll can translate into C-1.

Actually, Eric Jackson demonstrates a "no-hands" roll in his video "EJ's Rolling and Bracing". Watching that video was a big eye-opener in my quest for a canoe roll, because it proves the importance of keeping your body low and in the water, no matter what kind of boat you are in.

Beyond that sequence, it was amusing to watch EJ throw a much younger Dane around in a boat in a pool to bomb-proof his roll. Man, if a copy of that video had gotten into the hands of child protective services a couple years ago, I think EJ would've been headed to court!
