For me; boating brings me closer to to something divine, and in a open canoe I'm 8 Inches closer.

My old Subaru run off the road by our shuttle "person" on Canada Falls in Maine. And the slalom boat was fixable, a few small cracks.
My new shuttle car (and new shuttle "people")... insurance was good to me.
And another good shot of my buddies Astro Van at the put-in for Mill Creek in Lowville, NY (what a great run!)

Nothing is close to me so I get in my car and go.
Its 2 hours to the Gull River if it has water.
5 to the Ottawa
7ish to Lower Yough
8ish to Upper Yough
9ish to Lower Gauley or New River Gorge
15ish to Ocoee
What kills me reading this board is the USA paddlers that whine about having to drive 15 to 30 minutes to go boating.

This is an interesting post for me because I might have to buy another vehicle soon.
I was thinking Honda Civic, but do people think I might need something with more ground clearance? Maybe a Subaru Forester?
I have a Dodge Neon now, but it was kind of touch-and-go for some of the dirt road canyon shuttles.

My car is a Civic and it works, but I haven't been to any crazy put-ins. Just don't get a "nice" Civic.johnd wrote:This is an interesting post for me because I might have to buy another vehicle soon.

I used to have a honda civic, 1999. Great shuttle car even on dirt roads, but with only 95 horses you had to drive it like you stole it to get out of the Cheat River take-out.
Good car, wish i had the gas mileage of the civic, but I couldnt be happier with my Forester and my newer Forester, its a 2001 (other than the gas mileage, I get about 25 mpg with no boats).

I used to have a Outback and it was nothing but trouble. It was always breaking down and it didn't even have that high of miles. I know that is just one, and many people run Subarus for a long time.
They are expensive and the AWD isn't really that great of an advantage in the SE so I went with a
Hyundai Elantra Touring
I would totally recommend this thing to anybody in the market. It cost me about 14k brand new I got the base model its got almost everything traction control all the airbags the only thing I don't have on mine is cruise control which isn't a huge deal. The warranty is great, relatively good mpg, its fun to drive quite peppy for the engine size. Its a little smaller than an outback but not really that much. I give it a 9.5 out of ten for total package. Just thought I'd pass the word along

Our Outback did have head gasket problems at about 65,000 miles, but if you get the extended warranty its all covered. It has 145k now, still going strong. I have heard since that about 1/3 of them can have problems like this. It is great for winter driving and i've had it on very muddy roads in the springtime with no issues. I'd get another if they get a better rack system on the new models.
Subaru is very popular in the northeast US.

So did ours. Just outside of warranty (didn't have the extended). It also had a number of less catastrophic problems while still in warranty - stuff like water pump, alternator, etc. Although they were covered, we were without the car each time for 1-3 weeks because the dealer had to wait for the parts to arrive from Japan. Finally decided it wasn't worth the hassle and got rid of the car.craig wrote:Our Outback did have head gasket problems at about 65,000 miles, but if you get the extended warranty its all covered.
