Adding a deck hatch for in-boat gear storage

Post by (O)C »

Hello,

Has anyone added a round hatch to the decks of a plastic boat to stow more gear for overnighters?

Wondering who sells them & it's a difficult job to put one in...

Cheers

deck hatch

Those hatches are, I believe, the same as you would find in a marine supply store. Some sea kayaks have similar. You'd need a falt bit of deck the same size as your intended hatch and the guts to take a jig saw to a perfectly fine boat... That and you'd probably want to add a bulkead to seal off the compartment.

I think if I was going to pack a boat, I'd go with a Prijon since they don't have/need walls and the access is pretty easy.
