Well, many old Norse paddles were heavy, but not all.
Rich Brown would build them using any lay-up you wanted with any cloth you'd send him. This was well before the days when he offered a somewhat off-the-rack s-glass/Kevlar blade.
I had several normal-lay-up, all Kevlar, modest-size bladed Norse paddles which were quite light. I would buy the Kevlar from Sweet and he would get it over to Rich.
Bob Kauffman, and probably many others, had extra-lite-lay-up all-Kevlar bladed Norse paddles used for wildwater racing. Zoom.
My last Norse was a fat-shaft all-Kevlar blade out of Rich's kayak mold. I never liked it, as it was a spoon blade rather than a curved blade and I found its underwater recovery would occasionally zip off in unintended directions. Oops.
