Size and Brand of Float bag for Esquif Canyon?

Post by RapidMediaTVGuy »

Hopefully picking one up tonight and was wondering what size/brand of float bag's you would recommend for a Canyon? I'm just getting into whitewater open boating (been kayaking for 9 years) to get my wife down the river with me. Will be running bigger water day trips and shorter 3-5 day river trips if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the input.

Assuming the seats are installed, make some measurements. Measure from the tip of bow to where you want the bag to end. In the stern, measure from tip of stern to where you want the bag to end. Check with bag retailers or manufacturers on the size of the inflated bag (often what's given is the uninflated dimensions which are larger).

Harmony, Gaia and Mohawk all sell good air bags. Nylon ones are lighter than vinyl ones.

There's a chart here: http://www.mohawkcanoes.com/bags.html that gives common sizes to use for Mohawk boats, and even more helpful gives dimensions for uninflated and inflated sizes. You could use that chart to estimate sizes of other brands as well.

30" in the front, 36" in the rear. This is what I have in my Starburst which is essentially the same boat. Anything more in the front and the bow paddler may not have enough leg room if you use the boat for tripping. Get the largest center bag you can find if doing serious playboating

I have a Canyon, and outfitted it some time ago. See my forum topic on the myccr forum, pictures included, showing how they fit.

36" bags work fine both in stern and bow, I got mine from Gaia (standard Nylon).
