contact cement in cold weather

Post by scamp144 »

I,m new here, been lurking for a while but now I have a question for the people in the know.
I need to redo the outfitting in a boat and the can of cement says that what you are glueing and the adhesive should be at 65 degrees for 24 hrs before and 72 hrs after.
I don't have a heated area to put the boat in.Today we have 60 degrees and it's supposed to be the same tomorrow and then turn cold for a while. My question is should I wait till spring or go ahead and do this? Does anyone have experience in this area and should I wait or go for it?
I'm reading the red can.

I've done it, you just have to wait longer (sometimes a lot longer) if it's cold. if it's 60, you'll be fine.

I work with contact cement below freezing occasionally. Use a heat gun to coax the cure(carefully).

last time i had to glue in some foam i applied it inside, 2 hours later onto the car in 40 degree weather, and paddled with it the next day. i had no problem with it not being at all uncured.

a hair dryer works great for warming parts up. i use one every time i glue. i've never worried about post cure for contact cement, but if you are, you could easily creat a makshift oven out of stuff that's laying around. you might be suprised at how much a lightbulb will warm up the space under a tarp. a 75 watt bulb in a 2'x4'x2' box that i made brought the temp up to 95 degrees in a <60 degree shop.
be carefull you don't burn the place down!
