Its been awhile since I've gone down south in the winter for a little hospitality and great paddling in December. I drove down to Bryson City for their Jiffy Slalom. Met a few friends from Open Boat Nationals and a whole host of new ones. A great post race party and plans for a Sunday paddle the next day made it an awesome paddling weekend. We went down "Box Canyon" on the French Broad, which luck would have it was up as it poured all day Saturday during our race. I believe this race is still running and its still a big get together for alot of the open boaters. I might suggest you investigate a trip around this race if its still being held. You'll not only meet the friendliest paddlers on earth, you'll set yourself up for many future paddling trips to Dixie. And some of them may love to know they have a friend when they venture to the Great White North.

people from VT go down to Costa Rica all the time in the winter. I have never been there, but it sounds like heaven if you are looking for a longer trip.
i personally only paddle indoors after sept 1st. also go to the tanning salon to keep up with my lifejacket tan. *

* This year I am considering getting a millbrook boats tattoo, if such a thing is offered . . .
