Ohiopyle advice, please
I am an open boater from Toronto who will be passing near enough to the Ohiopyle area next Monday or Tuesday to make it tempting to stop. I have not paddled any of the rivers in that area, but others I paddle with have said the Lower Yough would be a good fit my skill level. The problem is that I am travelling on my own, so was thinking about seeing if any of the guided trips would take me on. Any suggestions/advice??
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: Ohiopyle advice, please - PS
I will have a boat with me.
Re: Ohiopyle advice, please
Check with "Cheeks" I beleive he is in guide mode there for the Summer.
Monday or Tuesday is bad for us weekend warriors but there is always someone around to boat at the Pyle. Just stop in and poke about. Weather forecast looks good as does levels. There are maps of the river at the put in booth. .. There is a chager to paddle.
Check the TRPC site - some of the gainfully retired folks in the area paddle during the week solo and have no problem with having someone join them.
Enjoy!

find cheeks. pm him here, if he's got enough gorrilla tape to patch his boat for the day he'll do it . then buy him a beer.

And I'm sure that since Cheeks (Chris) took the summer long vow of poverty and abstinence (aka became a raft guide) any beer would do.
I beleive he is working for OTP (Ohiopyle Trading Post).

+1 on asking around TRPC http://www.threeriverspaddlingclub.com. They have a message board that you can join and post to.
Also, a lot of the paddling trips get set through their (TRPC's) Facebook page now. It is a closed group but I believe that any member can add new members. I am Aaron Harchak (aaron at harchak dot com) on Facebook, if you send me a friend request I'll add you to the group and you can post there asking for someone to run with.
Oh, and to confirm what PAC said, Cheeks is working at Ohiopyle Trading Post as a guide this summer and would be a good contact to make.

For sure, you should check with Cheeks. If, for some wacky reason you couldn't line anything up with him I would suggest that you head out to Ohiopyle anyway. The LY is the most run piece of WW East of the Mississippi and it's almost garaunteed you would run into other boaters at the put in and ask to hop aboard their crew.

Re: Ohiopyle advice, please
Twice I've gone alone to the Lower Yough and hooked up with a small party for a good run.
But what I'm more concerned about is that you are, in fact, up to the run. Examples of things you've run successfully? I had already been running the Ocoee, even the New Gorge, when I first got to the Lower Yough. It isn't a terribly difficult run, but you can't just crutch it on a low brace.

Old post is old, but...
If anyone is interested in paddling the LY this summer, I do indeed live here, albeit without the beard. It got too hot.
You can PM me here, but internet is spotty in town, so best bet is to call 4eight4 55three 21seven3
The LY is a great beginner run that experts can still have a lot of fun with and I'm glad I live two minutes away from it

Bummer about the beard, Cheeks. I was looking forward to seeing Grizzly Adams on the LY this summer.
