When you jump in a pool do you hold your nose? (& close your eyes?)

I have plugs on my helmet straps, but really only use them on manky rivers where the water isn't so nice :o which is usually something like the East Race after a heavy rain...definitely not nice water.
I have to close my eyes as I'm a contact wearer...but occasionally have opened my eyes and not lost a lense yet. Wish I could keep my eyes open though!

Manky is a term used to refer to rapids with low water and lots of pin spots/sieves etc.

probably

same could be said for wearing a full face helmet.....
Communication with ur paddling buddies/crew/team etc. is dangerously reduced with a fullface. Cause you cant say everything with hand signals.

good burn and great initial post.

Speak for youself, my buddies manage just fine (both running whole rivers wordlessly through hand signals and speaking to each other wearing fullfacers).

Krikket, I know you live on the other side of the Atlantic so I would be interested to know how you use the word manky or is it even a term y'all use? And yes I have made plenty of runs using just hand signals, but everytime I've had to speak through a full face I have to pull the mouth cover down to be heard

That makes me think of this--

manky [ˈmæŋkɪ]
adj mankier, mankiest Slang
1. worthless, rotten, or in bad taste
2. dirty, filthy, or bad
[via Polari from Italian mancare to be lacking]

Always happy to be of assistance

Well now you have me thinking, I dont hold my nose jumping/ diving or even swimming under water... So I dont know how that translates to a nosefull while in a boat...you would assume that would carry over.

and I roll eyes open :o , but close em while jumping or diving :x

Alot of quoting going on on page 3

The meaning (and as KNeal shows, dictionary definition) is something which is dirty... Like the water of bubbly creek for instance.

It got co-opted into paddling slang (on both sides of the pond) as describing a run which is not "clean" that is, it's chossy, has blockages, or generally has a lot of objective hazards... But that doesn't overide the original meaning.

I can hear my friends just fine when they're wearing full facers... maybe you're not close enough, aren't speakng loudly enough or have conducted excessive team safety meetings and are unable as a group to focus in on the sounds of the human voice over background noise.

I believe that at least some of the problem with not hearing people wearing full face helmets is that the sound of one's voice bounces off the chin piece and reflects into the speakers ears, causing them to not speak as loudly as they normally would.
