I think you mentioned you're paddling a Nitro - I found with mine, I really threw my weight around without knowing (IE forward and backwards)... that can get you in trouble. You throw your weight forward at the wrong time, the bow could dig in and start to carve in an undesirable direction.. and the only way to correct is a huge correction stroke which kinda sucks..
But as said before, practice.. it's great that you have a bunch of supportive friends that take you down rivers.. that helps huge having paddling buddies
