Thanks for the loanout of the light L'Edge. The earlier heavier model didn't really work for me but the lighter one is a different cat all together, IMHO. I liked it.

Richard Guin, hello if you are looking. Hope the car transmission thing worked out, 2nd time lucky? Vancouver paddlers are paddling road warriors but you win the prize with your 3 day one way epic, we were impressed.

It was good to meet you and put a face behind Mohawk after years of paddling the product. I enjoyed the run down the Payette Canyon with you, trying to pick apart your lines and I can't believe I blew away the offer to paddle your boat. Less thinking, more impulse.
Better yet, I would have seen you in a kevlar V11.

Pumps are useful to give a shower to your fellow kayaker. His wife asked me to do it.

how fast is a pump?

I have never used one so far, and never installed one cause I always thought that if I need it, it's not quick enough to empty the boat. In a regular situation I can eddy in and dump. When I need help is when the boat is full and I have no chance to get to shore, and I've now reached the rivers where running it full is not a good idea anymore

imagine following situation: a 320 feet long class 4-5 big volume rapid with five big stoppers in it, steep walls, no eddy, absolutely no chance to run a dry line...I would have been full to the max after the first stopper and would have swam in the second at the latest with swimming bein possibly lethal at that point

Would a pump be fast enough to keep the boat manoeuverable so it would have enabled me to run that rapid?

pumps are for conveinence. to keep you dry in big water you need multiple pumps and thats getting silly. i did see a video of a 4 pumper though. it comes down to volume. how much water does your boat hold when running it? my boat holds 5 minutes worth at 1200gph.

I have posted before about a story where a pump saved my boat from going further down stream, but Harry is right, they are not fast. A good rule of thumb is that pumps might be able to keep up with the water coming in while you are surfing.

A pump helps only for convenience. In a very small canoe with no space to use a bailer the only choice is to stop and dump. Or outfit the canoe so that when full it can still be maneuvered reasonably. I think that with Insolence's scenario a pump would not be fast enough to make the needed difference so outfitting is the only other reasonable choice
