Spin advice

Spin advice
by Andy
I paddle a converted X and am trying to spin the boat. I can initiate well, get backwards in the hole, but can't make the full revolution. I always end up with a dramatic flip to my off-side, up river into the hole (rock). I've hit the upstream rock a few times, so I'm starting to chicken out. Any advice on how to complete a full revolution.

This happens to me
by Dylan
This happens to me a lot as well. When I try to spin on my onside I get stuck in a backsurf. So Scott Macgregor was teaching me to spin to my offside using my hand to initiate, it was scary at first but now I am getting the hang of it.

I'm struggling with this also...
by Rob W
What I've been told is that I'm not turning my head soon enough to look back at the hole. So I guess it's back to smaller friendlier holes where things are happening slower to work on leading with my head. Hopefully that helps and hopefully others that have this down will chime in.

I really prefer to spin starting on my offside, either initiating with my T-grip hand or an offside stroke. It is far easier to finish the spin onside for me, than with some contorted offside stroke. carving up to the top of the wave or hole, starting the spin from the top, makes all the difference in not flushing out and making the boat easier to get around.

Perhaps try to elevate a little...

Make sure you're leading with your body and maybe try to elevate your spins a little. Also, concentrate on your edges and weight placement, it's important to move your weight foward on the 1st half and back on the second half. Not a whole lot, but a little so that you boat pivots around alittle better. Good luck,
