Looking for info:

I just recently bought an OC-1 and am looking for some books and/or videos to get me headed in the right direction. I'm on the West coast where most people think a canoe is for flat water. I have found some info on basic technics and strokes. I would like some info on outfitting. The boat came outfitted but I would like to fine tune it. I would also like to learn how to role it. All I know is it doesn't role like my kayak. So what are your favorite resources short of finding a mentor?

You might contact www.NOC.com to see if they have a copy. It is an excellent video. The Open Canoe Roll by Bob Foote is also good. You can roll a C-1 like an open boat, but you can't necessarily roll an open boat like a C-1.

Both videos are good, but Solo Playboating is open boat specific. There is also a new one I haven't seen yet - "Drill Time!". I think you can find them at www.performancevideo.com or www.whitewatervideo.com

Also, I know California is a big state, but Ric Taylor is somebody who knows canoes aren't just for flat water - he's in the LA area.

Drill Time's Better

Drill Time is much better than Solo Playboating for learning. It was produced later and is a more structured teaching video. It focuses on one stroke at a time. There is also a good handbook of drills to take to the water with you.

Open Canoe Roll Video - Bob Foote

Also, Bob Foote has a video called the open canoe roll. Above water shots, under water shots, on the pool deck shots. Very good.

But you also need someone to finetune you and watch what you're doing.... unless you roll up straight away!

I also highly recomend Thrill of the Paddle, great book, tons of info. You might check out www.bobfoote.com and I think playak.com might have something on rolling c1s. learning to roll will go much faster if you have someone who knows how work with you, but the book and a patient spotter for the pool is how I learned.

a mentor...(long version)

i read the books...i watched the videos...and i watched others on the river, over and over. i learned to roll my kayak in a class with others. when i started paddling C-1, i was befriended by one of our local "legends", who took the time to stand waist deep beside me, over and over, until i could roll up. (he of course says it was worth it for the entertainment - thanks Bob!) next season, i lost my roll one day, lost it for a whole week. called Bob, and we went paddling - he watched me attempt one roll - and made one suggestion, and my roll was back. just picked up a savage skeeter OC-1, and made sure Bob was there the first run down the river. the boat rolled up easily - again - thanks Bob.
so what's my point? find a mentor. Bob explained it to me this way - rolling is an art - one of the last things on the planet that works best when it is handed down, from one who knows how - to one who wants to learn. just my 2 cents-worth.
