Is there enough room in an Atom to pack gear for camping
by Quico Reed Quico Reed
It seems there would be enough if you used drybags as inflation bags.
How fast is the Atom on flatwater? How does it compare to the Cascade?

My opinion, hardly

If I remember correctly, the Atom was designed after the Viper c-1 squirt boat and has a fairly flat deck on the front and back. Even though it is a longer plastic c-1 than the other conversion kyacks, I would not want to paddle it on flat water for a day. Rather, I think the Cascade would do better in both instances. Also, there are several glass c-1's that would fit your interests; however, I cannot recall their names. Perhaps Scott B., Dave M., et al. can recall them for me?

You could...
by Sir Adam
IF you have a smallish tent I suspect you could cram a few days worth of gear into the boat-it will be lower in the water and even slower, though....
Boats you may want to look into are older "expedition" type boats and race boats (Blackwater, Hahn, older (higher volume) slalom designs (Max II perhaps:)?). There are people who use the Cascade as a tripping boat, and I would say it is better suited than the Atom, but in general I'd go glass (but then again I usually do:) ).

P.S. Pictures of boats at cboats.net as usual.

Camping C-1
by DaveM
I would probably use a Hahn as a camping C-1. The boat is light(+). It's big(+). Manuverable, will handle much like a Mad River ME(+).
About the only negative I can think of is that finding one may prove challenging.
PS: The Hahn was the boat Andy Bridge used in his Baffin Island Expedition.
Good Luck...DM

Hahns for sale
by Sir Adam
Greetings...
I know of at least 1 Hahn for sale in the Northeast.... Personally I like that Blackwater better (same hull, I think), but that's just because of the paddle indents in the deck:) .

Blackwater / Hahn
by DaveM
Adam,
The Hahn is a slalom boat (13'2" etc.) Andy designed the Blackwater as a creek boat. I'm not sure of it's length, but it's shorter than the Hahn.
Given the Hahn's length, I would imagine it would track better than the shorter Blackwater.
Also, you can mount a paddle on the deck of a Hahn. Many folks did back in the day. My uncle and Dad kept there's on the foredeck, Sweet kept his on the sterndeck.
