Perception HD1 Mold

Post by JNER »

I used to paddle a "Head Dismemberment One" and am looking to paddle one again. There was a vicious rumor floating around five years ago that the mold was in the possession of someone in Ohiopyle, PA. I am really interested in getting a glass one made, so if anybody knows anything, fess up!

Gracias!

I know you're not alone in wanting a glass HD1, but I don't know where the mold is....post here if you find it, and I'll add it to the "Composite Molds" section on the left navigation bar...

Well...

If you can let me know about the "details" around the rumor and I'll try to scrap up some facts. Any details on the HD1 would aid in my inquiries as well!

HD1 Stats that I know

Post by JNER »

HD-1 Came from Hahn Hull Shape.
13'-6" Length.
First Production Year: 1979, I think.

Stats on Ohiopyle rumor:

There was a "shop" on the side alley in the middle of town. If you went down the alley that ran parallel to 381 next to OTP, going north, there was a little shed that looked like nothing. Leaning up against it was a hull that looked like an HD1. Exploration into OTP and talking with Joel (I think, or maybe it was Bear) led to the discovery that somebody in town had the mold. I can only assume that the garage was probably owned by the one possessing the mold. Mind you, only assumptions. This is all I know.

Since I don't live all that close to Ohiopyle anymore and no other venues have produced results, I was under the assumption that the mold might be lost. I am hoping somebody close to Ohiopyle can search and turn up something.

Gracias!

I'll stop in and talk to Joel next weekend (if I remember). FYI he purchased Mountain Streams so he is a tad busy these days running both operations.
I also know the shed so I'll poke around there too.
If I hear of anything I'll let you know.

Update.....

Post by PAC »

I talked to Joel and others up in Ohiopyle and the HD1 that WAS up against the shed was an actual HD1 boat, not a mold. That boat however, is no longer around - I also went out and looked about for it in the "discarded" boat piles in town, but with no luck!
But all is not lost in your quest - the rumor is that there is a mold for the HD1 in the area under that ownership of Jim Wilson (I couldn’t track him down) who you should be able to contact through WV.
I talked to Keith Backlund and he just picked up some really nice ash for OC gunwales - if you’re interested. He also will be producing a new paddle shortly – but that will be a different post - it was a very informative weekend!!! :)
Let me know if you need any more help / info. related and I’ll try to help out. Good luck!

Email me via the board or post your email - I have Tim Wilson's (owner of the mold) home number. :-)
