One more rolling question

Post by mshelton »

I've been working on my rool alot here lately, it's still in the "party trick" phase but it's a bomb-prof party trick (haha). Anyway, I use a curved blade and am still unsure if I should just use the non-powerface or rotate the paddle in my hand and use the powerface, which does seem like it gives me more of a catch when initating the roll but I don't know if it's something that'll get me in trouble (having to reposition the paddle) latter on. What do some of you guys do?

Non-power face

Post by Sir Adam »

When I roll up I always use the non-power face of the blade. That way I'm sure to come up on a low brace, and it's not too complicated hand-rotation wise. If you have a good hip snap you barely need a paddle (one of these day's I'll figure out a hand roll...really!).

If you do a high-brace roll, use the power face.

If you do a low-brace roll, use the non-power face.

If you do a no-brace roll, use your face.

It is the hip-snap and flex of your spin, that is... ) to ( ...which will rotate the boat from above your head to below your head.

Your paddle position is pretty much irrelevant until you are upright.

...but when you are upright, low brace (non power face) is the easiest position to be in.

i suggest having the non-power face down, if you're ever in a situation where you need to get a good strong stroke in to avoid being munched right after rolling up then coming up with your power-face facing the wrong way can get you into trouble

I am with sir adam, the paddle orientation is not very important- it's what your body is doing that matters.
don't mess around rotating the paddle when you flip. if you let go you might loose that sucker! just keep your grip and roll with the non power face.
