True words from Jenkinsburg, WV locals

Post by Ed Eout »

So if you've ever run the Cheat Canyon you've experienced the Jenkinsburg bridge take out. A highly recommended cultural experience during high summer. The locals, mostly too young to drink, hang out there and drink, a lot.
Upon seeing our group of 7 Yaks and 1 CBoat, one of the local boys hollers out "Look Billy Bob, there's a real pro, he only has a single oar".
Then he gave me an malt beverage. Totally made my day.
have fun or go home!

I was there, back when the county was rebuilding the bridge and had a porta-potty set up, to see some of the hangers-out... uh... "sacrifice", shall I say, the porta-pot to the river gods. Jeez was I glad I had just taken out, and would not be back for at least a week! Ewww, did I sympathize (for once in my life) with the lakefront homeowners downstream!

Another time there was an SUV in the river at the upstream takeout (in my later years I tend to go down to the downstream takeout at the Sandy confluence because it's an easier climb out) where all the holler cats compete in the "world's smallest bikini" contest.

Yet other times we have hooted and hollered at the 4-wheeler mud-hole contests. We weren't truly amused, but it is, sometimes, better to appear to appreciate the recreational activities of the gun-owning classes than to frown or sneer at them.

I'm told by Ralph Teter, proprietor of the campground in Albright (how are Ralph and Kathy these days, BTW? Anyone know?) that the majority of the hilarity there is caused by out-of-state lowlifes. He kept using the words "Ohio" and "Pennsylvania" in the same sentence with some other words I would just as soon not repeat.

I'm also told by Ralph that Jenkinsburg is intermittantly (i.e., between raids) the biggest open-air drug market in West Virginia.
