Got my PFD and helmet starting to look for a boat. Need Help

Post by junkinduck »

I bought a Ronin PFD and a WRSI helmet both fit well. I am pleased with both. I am taking the OC1 class from Eli next week using one of his boats. I will be looking for a good starting point for a canoe. I am 300# and 6'6". My size is what led me away from the kayak. Anyway, any big guys and what do you paddle? Hopefully after the class I will be in the market for a boat and out on the river.
Do any open boaters paddle the New? I don't see much on here about the New.

Congrats. A lot of open boats will fit you. Look at a Caption for your size. And yes a lot of folks do the New. Three of the local paddling clubs do a New River Rendevous on Labor Day, Memorial, and July 4th weekends.

I am 6'7" 260 and have paddled an Encore for years. I have one for sale currently and would handle your size easily. I feel it is more responsive and an all around better paddle than the Caption.
The boat I am selling is Fuscia with wood gunnels, and Perception saddle it is in very good condition. I have airbags as well. This weekend I will be traveling from Atlanta to Lexington. I can bring the boat with me if you would like to meet somewhere.

I am 6'3 225-230, depending on the day, and I paddle a Dagger Ocoee (I have a feeling I may be pushing the weight limit) and really like it...Good luck with your instruction and welcome!

I paddle the New as much as I can, I will be paddling it this Sunday. I live in WV so let me know if ever you want to paddle, I can always be talked into it!
