refinishing a wood paddle

Post by maorisioux »

i'm resurrecting an old azzali canoe paddle. it's in pretty bad shape and will definately need a couple layers of glass on the whole blade.
thinking to let it drink as much watco oil as it can first.
anybody have any experience glassing over freshly oiled wood?
i'm sure the oil should cure awhile, but how about adhesion after that? thanks in advance for any opinions

Well, you shouldn't have oiled it. You're going to have to wipe it with solvent many times, and maybe let it bake out in the sun, to get the surface free enough of oil to proceed.

Normally you would NOT want more than one layer of glass. More is just weight, and makes a wood paddle feel like a Norse. 4 oz glass may be enough. 6 oz gets rather heavy.

Sorry to give you the bad news about the oil.
