Al, my standard for building saddles is 1" of clearance between the hull and the bottom of the foot pad. I do offer customization on this though, as some folks want less, and some folks want more clearance.

Do what feels best for you. If you're fitting into the thigh hooks well but can't sit all the way down, trim the back rest. Just remember to cut a little, check the fit, and repeat.

Elgotto, I just leave the dowels unglued, or "floating". If you glue it, it will tear loose every time.

I sell all my saddles with a 6" long, 1" diameter plastic dowel for attaching the saddle to the thwarts. I also sell these dowels individually, with a stainless screw and cup washer for $7 each. I have used hardwood dowels in the past and they all end up rotting, even taking great care and sealing t...
