For thigh straps i use two loops of webbing bolted to the bottom between my legs, the webbing strap runs through the two loops and then attach on a pull release buckle, made by myself. velcro sounds like a good idea - maybe i will replace the buckle with velcro - just to see if it stays done up

Enough time on the net time to make my new thigh straps!

Here's my set-up

Post by RodeoClown »

I made my own, which incorporate 2" quick release cam buckles (ala rescue PFD style) and some big ladder locks. I drilled holes in the release levers on the cam buckles, and tied them together with some cord covered in plastic tubing. When I pull on the cord/tubing that joins the two buckles together, it releases both straps. Since it's tough to get the straps tight with just the cam buckles, I added the ladder locks, so after I fasten the cam buckles, I can really craaaaank down on the thigh straps. Here are some pictures:

Nice set up. I like the tubing trick. That looks like it holds a nice loop in the release cord. The top photo appears to show a lap belt. What type of release are you using on that?

It started out with a ratchet on one side, and the quick-release from a rescue PFD on the other. I found that I since the quick-release had the metal tri-glide on it (it was actually part of the belt from an old rescue PFD), I could actually tighten it pretty well. (if you just have the cam buckle, they're pretty hard to tighten). after realizing this, I took out the ratchet buckle (it wasn't doing me much good anyway). I then decided I didn't like the positioning of the QR buckle the release was getting stuck down between the hip pad (yikes!), so I took the belt out and ended up putting in my squirtboat. I'm still trying to decide if I want to replace it with something else or not.

I spent awhile looking for a reliable quick release mechanism for my thigh straps. I ended up going with a snap shackle (made for sailboats...you can get it from Marine supply stores). The shackle connects both straps to a central ring and they're designed to release under load by just pulling on a lanyard. I also have plastic QB buckles that came on the thigh straps (NorthWater) that I have up near the top of my strap--I figure, worse case scenario (say, a back deck pin?) I have a decent chance of releasing my thigh straps even though I can't reach the shackle lanyard.
