Miscellaneous Materials Source & Glueing to Poly(ethylen

Post by NZMatt »

Hi All,
At verious times the question has come up of how to glue outfitting to poly(ethylene) (either for C1 outfitting or plastic OC1s). Space Canoe at one point mentioned 3M Scotch-weld Structural Plastic Adhesive DP-8010 as being the right product to use. He also said you have to follow the instructions exactly and use the right applicator system (ie. the one made by 3M). I've just found a source for this stuff so I thought I would share it with you all:

www.mcmaster.com (look on catalog page 3167)

They have the adhesive, the applicators and all. Price for enough to outfit a C1 isn't cheap though - $15-30 for the glue and $55 for the applicator set (applicator, nozzles and 10:1 plunger), but it's actually designed for poly(ethylene) and would be a lot simpler than srtuggling with building pedastal frames and dryer than drilling holes in the hull.

McMaster Carr is a great source for lots of tools and supplies useful for C1 and OC1 outfitting - I got all the hardwear (screws, etc.) from them for the conversion I did. They're not the cheapest place in the world, but the range of things they have is amazing. If you're looking for that really bizarre screw or screwdriver bit or whatever, they've probably got it. Fast service too, although they're more set up for engineering workshops than individuals. I think they might even have foam, but are more expensive than boating sources.

Anyway, enjoy!

I've used two products before...

1. Vinyl-Tec available from Northwater at most paddling stores
2. Contact Cement available from any hardware store

The problem i had was vinyl-tev worked great on anything vinyl (anchors, open canoe hulls) but didn't stick to my plastic kayak. Contact cement works great on plastics but doesn't even think about sticking to vinyl patches, it does however enjoy canoe hulls pretty well. But i found that both of the products liked foam. So for attaching those 'D-ring' anchors to the plastic kayak I just used vinyl-tec to attach the anchor to a thin bit of foam, and used contact cement to attach the foam to the hull of the boat. It has been bombproof so far and I've been using it all spring with my ratchet straps.

Both come at a much better price too! Contact cement in various container sizes starts around $5-$15CA and Vinyl-Tec comes in around $12CA

I'm pretty sure this would adhere to most materials am I wrong?
