C-1 boat suggestions

I have been paddling canoe for five years and switched to c-1 in an atom 2 years ago. Liked the speed but not enough volume in the right places. . . then i convert a hoss- great creek for big water boat but not much play, too . . long. I recently tried a super ez c-1. . . I loved the spins and the surf but it was very slow to ferry. Any boat suggestions on a good play with enough volume for the Ocoee. I am 6' 195.. Maybe a g-force?

I'm about your weight. I've done the Ocoee in my Big EZ & it challenged me due to the extreme lack of speed. I wouldn't go any smaller than 51 gallons. If you're paddling the Ocoee stay away from glass unless you're a much better boater than I am. You'll spend more time doing glass work than paddling.

You may want to try a Forplay. It's a gallon smaller than the Big EZ, but has another foot of length & nowhere near the rocker. It's way faster than the Big EZ & spins better on a wave. It does not carve as well & it will pearl & ender you out on steep waves though. The Forplay has slicey ends, but they're not wingy. You have to force the ends down since the deck & hull volumes are about the same. It will bow & stern squirt, but it's not as smooth as some other designs.

Interresting Question there MikeW.

I have been researching and have some pratical experience with it as well. I ended up with a Jackson 4Fun and a Jackson Super Fun. The 4Fun was a little to small as I weigh about 200 lbs at 5' 11". I wrote a quick review a few weeks ago on this forum. I have a Jackson Super Fun on order and will be converting it shortly to hopefully get back some of the River Running qualities. One thing to remember with the Jackson's David Knight is their designer and he is a superb C-Boater in his own regard in addition to a superb Naval Architect. Colin Kemp at the Valley Mill Boat Shop in Darnestown, MD 301-840-7388 will even do the intial conversion to make it river ready as in take delivery and paddle! Final fitting is up to you. He is on the Jackson Team and has access to all the CAD drawings to set things as close to you as he can.

As to an alternative; the new EZG 60 or 50 looked pretty good as well though the hull did not quite look as current as the Jackson.

Also, I am sure Marko will chime in regarding the Wheelboy and Big Boy.

If you're suggesting a Forplay for the 195lbs-er who is looking for more volume and speed and river running capability, isn't the WS Score a larger version of the Forplay - similar characteristics, but bigger?

Yeah, the Score would probably be a better river runner than the Forplay. Great suggestion! I'll bet the Score wouldn't dive like the Forplay.

Check out and demo the Big Boy (PM Bill R.). I paddled one on the Lower G (Glass version, oh I'm 5'9" #180+ without my gear) and found it to be a steller surfer (front & back) and could play better than I could.. 360'n and such. Even with a beach ball as outfitting it was easy to move about making some of the more difficult moves with ease... oh and did I add it likes to surf.
I had more fun at the D. Ledges than I ever had.

Just my $.01 as a II- IV cboater! Also try the Sith - it was also a hoot and a 1/2!

I have a friend that has a G ride, he is a big guy. . .looks like good volume but it is short. . . any one paddled one before?

I have a forplay that you can have for $150 if you want?
It's used but the hull is still in good shape. I has no outfitting left in it but i still have the kayak seat.

I have just converted a Wave Sport ACE 5.1 after seeing someone else's good luck with it. I love mine Ran the New Boston Section of the Farmington in it yesterday watch www.Kayakphotos.com for pictures of me going through "Washing Machine" The boat is a lot of fun. I am 6'2'' and oveer 200lbs.

The Forplay wouldn't have any more volume than your current playboat, but it would definitely ferry faster. Then again you didn't say you needed more volume- just, "enough volume for the Ocoee."

Also look at the Jackson Hero and Superhero. Fast for length, which is good to have in a C-1 conversion, and lots of volume in the right places.
