torn rotater cuff
how long have people waited before paddling after mostly tearing the rotater cuff?
i havent seen an orthopedic surgeon yet, but the x-rays looked good as to there being something left to hold my clavicle to me scapula.
the ER doc said i couldnt ski for 8 weeks, i said 3.
we shall see what happens, hopefully i get back in action quickly.
at least its not spring right now!!!
cheers

I just waited until it felt good and then worked hard to
rehibilate it.
BTW, I have a theory that canoeists injure their rotator cuffs much more often than have dislocated shoulders, which I think is more of a kayak injury. I think we tend to hurt the cuff when we do a low brace and lift our heads and bodies away from the paddle therby injuring the cuff. Do others agree or disagree?

i actually was mountain biking in a skate park, trying to do a 360 off of a quarter pipe, and didnt land, either under or over rotated, i think it was over. so i basically fell from 8.5 feet straight to concrete while still spinning. and hit my shoulder, my head, and my hip into the ground, breaking my cheek bone, tearing my rotater cuff, bruising 3 ribs, and my cheek bone. and knowcking myself out for a couple of minutes.

i would agree that it is a more likely area to unjure, im not sure of the other ways to tear it, the way it was described to me was tha a sudden impact to the outside of the shoulder will push the shoulder blade back and up faster than the clavicle can respond.
cheers
at least i can work on my boats
and type.

shoulder injury like rib injuries
1-2 days- but lower the class of river and complain a lot-my shoulder just had a minor separation-no tears of ligaments, about a .5" rise from the Cheat Canyon, I paddled the lower Yough the next day. with lots of ibuprofen, and then only paddled every other week for 6-8 weeks. I started doing shoulder excercised about 2-3 weeks ago to strengthen the area.

My torn rotator started as upper biceps tendonitus which worsened. More of a wear-tear injury than sudden trama. Ice, anti imflams as needed and rehab took care of it. It took about a month to where I found it starting to strenghten and heal. Please note that I said started. A little friendly advice for anyone rehabing with elastic straps shut in a door... Long term relations with your significant other will not be damaged if you let him/her know not to open the door from the other side while you are vigorously tugging away on your elastic. (Yeah..... I had the experience.)
