I owned a Shaman for a couple years and really liked it. I bought a Viper 11 back in November and love it. The only thing I miss about the Shaman is the speed, it's one of the fastest whitewater canoes I've paddled. The Viper took a little getting use to but a month or two of class 2 during the winter is all it took. As far as the Viper 12 it should be a little faster than the 11 and closer to the Shaman in hull speed.

I haven't checked this out yet, but in doing some shopping online, if you can get to NC, or know someone who can pick it up for you, a company there seems to be selling Zephyr's, fully outfitted with bilge pumps, for $1345.

That does cut into that price difference, if that is really the boat you want.

Like I said, I haven't called them, but that price list says valid as of 3/16/07.

narrowing a boat affects more than the edges, it affects the
rocker...maybe even more than the edginess

when you alter the bottom that much it can really change your
opinion about a boat a lot....we use to change the width just for the
fun to see what would happen

someone said that Frankie did both the viper and ocoee.. well yes,
but the different company's then bastardized them to there own
liking... the Viper ends are nothing like the original, but that's what
Mohawk wanted...so that's what they got, they where blunt but you
could put standard wood gunwales on to the end...the Ocoee was
a dream come true, but Dagger/Steve detuned the edges...s-h-i-t it
was performance to the max. fast, edgy, quick...Frankie just was
happy doing what he was doing

really can't blame either company as they are in the market to make
money, and you can sell more boats they way they are now ... there
would be way less people capable of handling them
DougB (wrote)....

Pat, I've got a Sunburst (and probably a Caption soon too) for tripping.
I need something dedicated to playing.
you also mentioned speed... they are not usually the two different aspects
to look for in the same boat...but the viper beats all of the
above when looking for these two...and yes the 12 would be better for you.

as for viper vs ocoee vs shaman vs probe man that's like a whole
bunch of comparing...if you are in the market for a playboat two of
those two shouldn't even be in the discussion

have you looked at the Spark it's fast? also would the Zephyr be fast enough,
I was surprised at it's real speed

Viper vs. Ocoee

Post by Oci-One Kanubi »

I sold my last (of 4) Ocoee to my friend Byron Funnell of Ft. Wayne, IN. Byron had been paddling a succession of beat-up Vipers, both 12s and 11s, for years.

A year later I bought it back for the same thing he had paid me for it. He just couyldnn't get comfortable in it; said it was way twitchier than the Viper.

Byron is a good boater, but also a good family man who lives in flatland and doesn't get in many Class IV river days each year, so if you are able to boat a lot you may adapt to the Ocoee, otherwise you may find the Viper more comfortable.

I've never paddled a Viper myself, so I can only offer this second-hand opinion.

Viper 12 - one of my favorite boats ever (open or decked) - paddled it to pieces. Fast, stable enough to shoot photos from, could get me down Chattooga Section IV

Shaman - spent about 15 minutes in one - impressions : aggressive round hull design, fast. The owner was a lot smoother in it than I was

Zephyr - the new Viper 12. hopefully it will take longer to paddle to pieces...

I would go with the Viper 12 because it's a good boat from

class 1 through class 5...big water or low volume creeking. I think you'll find it's much more stable than the Ocoee. I've paddled the Ocoee, Viper 11 and 12, Rival, H2Pro, and various C1s, etc. I found the Viper 12 more stable than the Viper 11 and Ocoee. Like any hard chine boat I tend to stay on one knee or the other. Although once I paddled a couple of seasons in the Viper 12 I now like the Viper 11 more. I still paddle both because both of mine were gifts from someone who had put holes in them...so I paddle one while repairing the other. Never paddled a Shaman or Probe.
