creekin

Post by oc1paddlr »

oc1 creeking offers a "bit" more view and reaction time, but of course more boat to move. You do have more hull blocking you from all those dam rocks ,lest thats the way I do it. However, ABS and creeking may be like a first boy; girl friend...lot o fun but wears out fast. leaving you with a wrecked hull... search for some composits if you want to go creekin w/o replacing an ABS every year or two.

the jefe might be a litttle too tippy and hard to keep on line. note- i've never paddled one so take that with a grain of salt.

the burn is most excellent....so is the h3 255.

the cascade might be a good choice but it is so HUGE. an open boat is more fun than one of those pigs.

i have no clue about the Y

there's also the fluid solo....

The Y, my 2nd conversion C1, makes a great creeker (imo) nice lines, fast, roomy. But that was after my first conversion, a Dagger Gradient. A bad idea, spent most of my time scrapeing (sp) rock, upside down. I have a Fink now. However, I like to make my virgin run on a creek in an open boat, for scouting ease.
ps. and I like my pig too!! (cascade) crazyriver, if you want a pig I have an extra one. Great for creeks at flood stage!!!

crazy,
there's a guy up in the flathead that's selling his cascade for $350. in really good condition. it's an old design and you can pretty much convert anything you can fit in, but it's ready to go and would probably absorb your learning curve in a relatively short time. not a bad boat to start with though.

my .02

if you want more info on that, pm me.

From what I've seen and heard from local single bladers, the Ys make great C creekers. You could probably pick one up at a good price.

The Burn is an awesome boat but is going to be a little pricey.

Since you're first getting into it, look for something that has a semi planing hull instead of a round bottom creeker like a Micro. The stability will be much better, then if you wanted you could move to a rounder hull.

As for the Cascade, imagine paddling a 20 foot hotdog.

Correction: an 11 ft. open-face hogie, a stable hogie that handles big water with ease.

the fluid solo is a pretty sweet boat, looking into that....the cascade is definitely too big for small creeks.....the Y seems like a great boat but have heard it has a small cockpit, is this true? Right now, pending actually finding one and demoing it (as a k1), the fluid solo seems awesome.

Um yeah, if anyone tells you creeking in a C1 is more dangerous, tell them you know where they can stick their kayak paddle! I creek all the time in a C1 and have never felt like it was any more sketchy than some of the haggard lines I've seen K1's take. Same rules apply, use yer head and don't run something unless your confident but I know for a fact that many of the biggest runs in the country have been fired up by C1's with mad style.
As for boats, Blunt, Burn, Jefe. Those are the boats I've had the best experience with and all make kick butt creekboats. The Blunt is maybe the best boat I've paddled and I currently have a Burn and love it. I paddled a Jefe for a season and liked it as well, especially on smaller, tighter creeks. Fire it up in the C1 so all your K1 bros will be jealous of your stylin' lines!

I would have to dissagree somewhat. Having paddlesd since the 70's incl creeks like the Meadow in a c1( glass Hahn yikes!!) I have to say C1 creeking is somewhat more hazardous than kayak creeking simply bedcause kayaks have both high and low braces on both sides, rolls on both sides , lower center of gravity, etc. This allows yakers of lower skill come out alive at the take out . It takes more fearlessness to Creek a C1 than a kayak I believe ,and a willlingness to accept it, but therein is the great challenge . A creek C1'er has to be cooler underfire, stronger nerves and Ill say skill ,than yakers because the boat requires it. In other words, Its a more demanding boat that a kayak.

BigSteamnPileOfDogDoo if just anybody could do it...

... I'd paddle a kayak ...

half the fun (canoe) is seeing how far you can take one
