Pacific Northwest Gatherings

Post by yarnellboat »

Hi Oops, Milkman, Jan, Marc and others,

Any canoes go to the Wenatchee River Festival in June? Or is the water level too high in June?
http://www.wenatcheeriver.com/

Would there be any point to trying to get a c-boaters side-show at this festival or others?

Maybe we can't pull-off an ALF or a Single-blade Symposium, but is there any potential to make better use of other get togethers in the Pacific Northwest?

I know a few class III OCers around Vancouver who'd like to paddle new rivers and who'd like to learn more from some class IV instructors, and who are also just starting a little C-1ing.

PY.

p.s. If anyone wants to hook up with lots of canoes for class II-III day trips in SW BC, the Beaver Canoe Club does a "Rivers Week" in late June and early July around Merritt and Princeton.

wenatchee feedback

Post by kanusport »

I have run the wenatchee several times and I would say you should be fine. The river is challenging but no more than any other class III or IV river. It seemed more like a III to me. There are tons of people at that time of year so it would be no problem to get a shuttle or meet someone to paddle with.

Maybe we could start a list from our circles? Many festivals have few-to-no canoes, and most club events are class II floats, but I'll keep a list here. Keep in mind that you should conact the club/organizer for permission/details:

Clackamas Festival, May 17-18

Dan,

Festivals or not (keep in mind there's no canoes or canoeing events/clinics at any festivals here) - anytime you're in Vancouver we can find you a boat, some gear and a river. Just let me know when! In fact, based on our similar posts to cboats and CCR, I'll be offended if you've been to Vanc recently and didn't get in touch to paddle!

The Lower Columbia Canoe Club (Portland, Oregon) is going to be sponsoring the second annual Roaring River Canoe Slalom on August 23 (practice runs) and 24 (timed runs).

This slalom is specifically designed for canoes (OC1&2 and C1&2) and is set up on class 2 water on the Clackamas River. Kayaks are also welcome, but the course will be designed for canoes.

I'll announce more about it later.

There should definetely be a NW Canoe gathering!! The Salmon La Sac race is C friendly as well, first weekend of June
(7th or 8th)? Held on the Cle Elum River. the upper section is awesome (Class 4 w/ a 10' falls) and the Cooper which is just around the corner is Class V creek for those folks. the Lower Cle Elum is class 2 and the Yakima is also close. I think this is the weekend before the Wenatchee. There might be some folks from MT coming for that one. Theres also on site camping.
cheers

I'd be up for either or both. I'll post over on professorpaddle, too as my last c-boat topic over there got a few replies.

Hey Pat,

sorry, I can't make it. I am waiting for another shoulder surgery...

It's all about backcountry skiing for now ;-)

Hope to be back in the boat next year. :(

Cheers, Jan

Sounds like June 7-15 in eastern WA has some potential, book-ened by 2 events. I probably can't make the time for it because I'm going to try central BC (Prince George) later in June, but it's got potential generally.

Thanks to those who've responded (and to "Oops" for getting the idea started) - Milkman and others, keep posting any major club trips/events that others might like to join! I'll add them to the list I started above.

Anyone from the Seattle club check this site?

Cheers, Pat.

p.s.

Jan, I'm in the opposite situation - I've got a bad ankle that's kept me off my skis this snowy season. Very frustrating! So, I'm ready to paddle.

Pat,

I am a member of the Seattle based Paddle Trails Canoe Club - a great group of paddlers in my experience. I lurk this forum now and don't post 'cuz I am only on the river 2-3 times in the past year or more. But my day is coming to start paddling again regularly, so maybe we'll see you on the river some day.

Pat and all Northwestern C-Boaters:

Oops and I talked this afternoon about the Wenatchee River Festival and it sounds like fun. It would be something new to me - seeing more than one C-boater on a river would be a treat. I'll be between trips, so there is a good chance I can drive over. I look forward to meeting you and a few others from the area.

I have exchanged email with the event coordinator and she is happy to list any c-clincs that we can get going. There will also be c-boat classes in the downriver race and the freestyle events. Now all we need is to find someone to teach a clinic or two...

Again check out http://www.wenatcheeriver.com/

The event is scheduled for June 13 - 15. There is everything from class II to V+ and tons of creeks in addition to the Wenatchee which could be 20,000+ cfs in June and other large rivers nearby!

I'll also be attending The Clackamas Fest in Oregon and The PBR Fest in Boise. I'll be entering all the events I can and would love to not be gauranteed first b/c no else is competing in a cboat!

Unfortunately works call for me and I can't make it, and my other Vancouver friends are going to Prince George in mid-June, so won't be able to make the Wenatchee either.

Cone Bone, I'll keep my eye on the PTCC schedule for some good runs.

Oops, when are Clackmas Fest and "PBR" Fest?

Pat.

p.s. My gang is basically class III, not familiar with waterfalls etc.
