Canoeing is making a comeback in the SE

Post by Dooleyoc-1 »

I paddled the ocoee today with one new open boater (age 22), ran into about 10 other open boaters that I already knew but didn't know would be there and I saw 2 other groups of open boaters in their 30's that I didn't know while I was driving shuttle. Also, I saw canoes on top of trucks.

That's a lot more activity that you would have seen on a random saturday on the ocoee 5 years ago. I'm glad to see more new people getting into the sport.

I paddled the Nantahala on Friday, the Pigeon on Saturday, and the Nantahala on Sunday. We had 7 boats today. 6 open boats, 1 kayak. We had 2 TOG members today. Our 5 other paddlers were under 22. We ain't dead, yet.

P.S. my eldest son has stated that "kayaks are evil" from the tender age of 3.

While waiting for my turn to surf the wave at surfing rapid on the Nantahala Saturday I had a kid about 12 years old behind me in a kayak that basically apoligized to me for not being in an open boat. He said he was paddling a kayak just for the heck of it but he was going back to the canoe. Don't know what prompted him to tell me that but maybe they are starting to think a little differently about canoes.

We had a group of 7 open boats on the Nantahala Saturday with TVCC with 3 of the seven being noobs and 2 others running with the butt boaters to bring the total to 9 OCs. There were also many canoes that were not part of tvcc. The coolest was an older couple paddling tandem in a xl15 with a spray deck.

Post by smbjs »

The Lost Tribe will be doing their part Aug 6 - 8 adult training on the Hiawasee we get a couple of converts every year. Aug 20 - 22 around 75 boys on the Hiawassee & 10 or so stepping up to something more, Ocoee or pigeon. Very cool to see! we set the hook on a few every time.

Dooley- believe that number was down from the week before. Seems there was twice as many last week.... Although we had a couple first timers this go round.
