At the takeout, getting ready to load the canoes onto the truck, noticed a baby rattlesnake hiding in with the thigh straps.

Sure wouldn't want that falling on your head!

Don't know if we picked him up at lunchtime? Or whither he got washed into the boat at the takeout when the canoe had been turned over to be cleaned out.

And then a few years earlier, we're on the Smith River in Montana, and saw a snake swimming across the river. Well we went to check it out, and it really coiled if itself in the water with head raised, which keyed us into the fact it was a rattler.

And in Northern California, lots and lots of poison oak.
