Why do canoeists trash-talk kayakers?

Decked Canoes, Open Canoes, as long as they're canoes!

Trash Talk

Post by rcgalwa »

I agree with Eli. I too have many kayaking friends, but I feel there is this misconception by kayakers unfamiliar to expert canoeists that we do not belong on rivers above C II-III. They see the canoe as a limited craft and feel the need to let you and everyone on the river know. I know the best medicine is to show them you do belong, but that lack of respect just because you are in a canoe definitely creates animosity between the 2 groups.

I don't think theres really a whole lot of 'actual anomosity' between the two sports...

I mean... if the whole kayak v canoe thing ever got serious...we have the automatic trumph card... you say "ok. I'll tell you what...I'll paddle ur boat...and u paddle my boat for the rest of the day" - and theres no way that they r gonna agree to it unless you are on class II or something...

I would totally run class 5 in a kayak just to watch a kayaker try to do it in an openboat...but then again... my better judgement would get to me and i would tell them that "I don't think this is such a good idea... I dont wanna be responsible for what happens to u"

U kno how many attempts it took me to roll a kayak when i got in one for the first time...1

I bet you use the gel formula   ...stuff is for sissies.

i buy the original formula. a GALLON at a time. that's right baby.

I. am. the. man.

until you've dropped a vertical gallon of contact cement you have not lived. And i'm talkin original formula here..any monkey can glue with the gel.

..i pay my neighbor to shoot video of me when i'm doing glue-ups, we're gonna do some rad editing and post this vid on every forum I can find. I think if i can convert a few gel users to the original formula, i may get a free gallon..!!

Anyone who says or thinks kayaking is easy hasn't spent much time in one. I've boated just about every type of craft and the kayak is no easier than anything else. The very best boaters I know are kayakers and I'm thankful I can boat with them. I paddle a canoe because I just prefer the canoe but the kayak is a far superior craft, you can't argue that. Why not just paddle what you like and leave it at that.
Fullgnarls I'll say that the kayak is easier after a roll than a canoe because there's no water in it but thats it. Maybe that's why you think they're so easy because recovery is such a large part of your boating.
You know what they say about guys with long boats.............. I have a 16 footer!

Here in the southeast, Open Boaters are a force to be reckoned with. When we pull up at the put-in, most of the kayakers know who we are. If there is any trash to be talked it's usually amongst friends. You'll never see us duking it out at the put-in over the boats we use. If you come across a kayaker thats a ick to you on the water. He's probably a ick to other kayakers as well. Anyhow, kayakers are people too. I just wish they were better at swimming. They truly suck when they come out of the boat.

A few weeks ago I saw a dude swim in an eddy. he had all his gear in the eddy and decided to swim across the river to another eddy. In the proces he lost his boat and he ended up in a terrible eddy that required him to climb up a snow covered bluff. We watched from the bank. It was actually quite funny to us. That's what you'd expect from a typical kayak swim around here.

inferiority complex

superiority complex

maybe a bit of both

I think it's just that some people make far more of this "riff" than others do... from both sides.

"I’m trying to understand why canoeists trash-talk kayakers so much. "

Because they started it, that's why.

I m fortunate to paddle with a good group of mostly kayaks and they re great people... but to claim that they would never say anything about canoeing in a load of sh!t... Maybe you live on a different planet..
I don't live on another planet but I do live in Canada. Maybe we're just a whole lot nicer up here! Seriously, The kayakers I know and paddle with have no insecurities about their choice of river craft and really couldn't give a Sh&&t what anyone else paddles.

Tommy, I'll swap boats with you any time. Just promise not to destroy my yak on those falls you like running!
