I have always been told that the overthruster's primary job was to prevent skirt implosion. If you think OC1's suck to paddle when swamped try a K1 playboat!

All the other stuff was just icing on the cake.

hmmm- ive always found that enders are faster without deckplates, but tend to end in a vertical flip (attemped loop in an ion), whereas with them, if you have a big enough hole, you tend to get blown out of the water (quality enders). depends on your local hole and what you are interested in doing, i guess.

Now, would wood gunnels give more of that elusive "pop" that buttboaters so much talk about since they float better than vinyl gunnels? haha

i did some r&d over the weekend, got some enders in my new-to-me atom, and i really like the way it lifts upward once vertical. i'll have to get my cut down rodeo out next time, and bring a screwdriver with me.

Well...

it might also depend on the hole. For in a really powerful hole (thinking Team Trials - Rock Island) I've seen the eyelet's or grommets pulled out of air bags. Long decks may possibly help with air bag longevity, when dealing with big enders in extremely violent situations.

This is the first picture I ever recall seeing of an open canoe ender. It's Bob Foote in a Mad River ME, possibly in Burnt Ranch Gorge, sometime in the early or mid-80's. Who need decks when you have length?

One of the nicest enders I've seen in person looked just like that Bob Foote picture. Only it was 2 high school kids tandem in an ME on the WB Penobscot in Maine. They were in school believe it or not. The local high school has an outdoor ed program and they were in "class" that day

Was it at Nesowdnehunk? (spelling?) that's the only rapid on the WB that I could imagine putting two high school kids in a tandem, and them getting air, without me getting arrested for child endangerment.

well, we tried both ways.
in the big boat days (viper11) cutting the decks off made a big difference, if the hole was a little touchy. the scoop action was noticeable.
as we moved into cut down ocoees ie:10 ft. the boat was gonna ender anyway, so the deckplate maybe protected the airbag and seemed to make for more control in cartwheels... not that i ever managed to cartwheel much.

Shep, it was at the bottom of Big (lower) Pockwokamus, jus before the take out. ya spelling those rapids is just as hard as sayin them
