Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
Hello,
I have the opportunity to buy a Dagger whitewater tandem canoe for a ridiculously low price. The only problem is that the owners do not know the model... I need some ID help. I know a lot about OC-1 but can't identify this one. Attached are 2 pictures please help me figure this out.

Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
That looks like a Dimension to me--the greatest whitewater tripper ever made. BUY IT!
Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
Looks like a Dimension to me too and, although we can't see much of the hull, it seems to be in excellent shape. Looks like a great find.
Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
What about the length and width? The Dimension should be about 16 feet.

Buy it and sell it to me, been keeping my eye out for one of these.

Looks like quite a bit of rocker. Could be a Caper?

Well, its either a Caper or a Dimension. Both had quite a bit of rocker. Dagger stated 5" of rocker for the Caper and 5.5" for the Dimension. It's easy to find out. Measure the overall length. If it is 16' it is a Dimension, if it is 14' 4" it is a Caper.
For what it is worth, I think it is a Caper. If memory serves, the Dimension had a fair bit of shouldered tumblehome amidships. In one of the photos it looks as if the sides ascend straight vertically to the gunwales in that boat, and that's what the Caper hull shape is like.
Measure it and let us know.

It looks like a Dimension. A tape measure will tell for sure as the Dimension will be 16 feet long. Whatever it is, it looks like a nice OC-2 boat.
Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
Looking at those photos a little more closely, it looks as if that boat is equipped with 3 kneeling thwarts suspended on aluminum hangers, with the center kneeling thwart canted in the opposite direction from the outer two. That is how Dagger equipped the Caper-T, same hull as the original Caper (which was introduced as a solo canoe) outfitted so that it could be paddled either tandem or solo. When paddled solo the ends were swapped bow to stern, which was fine since it was symmetrical.
I know Dagger sold Dimensions with a pair of cane seats, with a pair of kneeling thwarts, and with neither for those who wanted to install their own seats and pedestals. I don't think they ever sold them with three kneeling thwarts (the Dimension would be awfully long/big as a whitewater solo). Of course, a previous owner could have installed a third kneeling thwart.

Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
Thanks for all the input... I would rather it be a Caper for the solo paddling aspect. The problem arises that the owner seems to be an inaccurate measurer. They told me it was 12 feet? It is obviously longer than 12. I cant measure it because it is about 350 miles away. What is this bot worth?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
If it is in good shape either a Dimension or Caper would be worth at least $500 in my opinion, and you could quite possibly sell it for more.
Ask him to measure it with a carpenter's tape from the tip of one deck plate to the tip of the other. If he can't do that get the hull identification number (HIN) which should be on a metal plate near one end, and possibly also written on the inside of the hull under one of the deck plates in magic marker. I can check and see if the model ID code matches that on my Caper. I am about 90% certain that is a Caper-T.

I'm leaning towards Caper, too. The Dimension is essentially a Legend with rocker added- the first picture looks a little like the Legend in the middle, but just doesn't look big enough in the ends. The second picture looks more Caper than Dimension to me, too.

Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
Is there a serial number on the boat? Look at the ends under the gunnels. That would pretty much nail it... Other than that ... I'd suggest buying it just to have it... if as you say the price is right. Looks like a nice boat and OC2s are always fun!

Re: Dagger OC-2 Identification Help
irony... a battered, beaten and well used 1st production year Dimension lying in someones backyard is the boat that got me into paddling whitewater.milkman wrote:That looks like a Dimension to me--the greatest whitewater tripper ever made. BUY IT!
the best info and specs come directly from the source... (look at the 1989 catalog for specs on the Dimension and Caper)

edit... link is weird... try this http://dagger.com/assets/images/uploads/files/DG91.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
have the seller get you some specs... overall length, width @ center, etc. (some better pictures would be nice too... I'm having a really hard time looking at these for some odd reason???)
if I could find another good one tomorrow for a reasonable price I'd buy it just so I could take my wife and daughter down some class I-II runs in the summer. that said... the Vertige X is in my eye's a great modern replacement and a bit faster.

Is there a reason no one has guessed "Caption"? It doesn't appear to have the mid-hull bloat of a Caper.
