Gauley Fest weekend.....

Post by PAC »

looking to see who is going this weekend and what folks are planning? I'm planning on going down and would like to meet up with others - if they are interested.
Not sure if I'm up for the UG zoo but maybe the LG, New or others if the levels are right on Sat / Sun.!
Hope to see you there! Paul C.

I'm planning on heading over. Would like to do the NRG if the levels are right also. It would be a first time for me so I'm hoping to find a good group.

I'll be at the Upper Yough on Friday and Monday. Saturday I'll be on the Upper Gauley and on Sunday I'm planning to paddle the entire 25 miles. If you would like to hook up I'll be paddling a blue Esquif Vertige-X set up as a solo boat.

Gauleyfest

Post by Eric »

I'm heading to Gauleyfest this weekend. Haven't had time to paddle lately so I need to get out. And I've still got that Pyranha C1 to sell. Maybe the New on Saturday if it's not way high. I haven't looked at levels lately. I will probably be at Battle Run camping. Nothing definate at this point beyond that.

Weekend plans....

Post by PAC »

Kevin, Eric, others (mshelton, KNeal, Berine, Jim, etc.) - I’m thinking the LG one of the days and NRG the other. Not sure which – I might have some others in tow (Maybe Warren, Big Al, Rock and Ron) and will have to adjust based on their in put. If you are flexible as to water paddled let me know! C – 412..310..6039 Maybe we can meet Sat. AM some place ( 9:00ish Satuday morning at Mabel's Truck Stop @ 129/19 )?
I’ll be down Late Friday night. Most likely camping at Mountain Lake Camp ground (by the Airport).

PS: Does anyone know if Rusty’s Shuttle is operational? Spending $10 really reduced the stress of getting into the LG. Otherwise we'll be part of the masses!

HELP!

Post by Mike W. »

My WV trip just fell apart :( . Now I'm the only one going. We had planned on the lower. I've done it once, a few years ago. I don't think I want to paddle the upper. I'd like to hook up with y'all & do the Lower or NRG on Saturday. I've got to be back in Carolina Sunday afternoon.

PAC, do you have directions to Mountain Lake Campground? All I could find was a PO Box.

I'm bringing the Viper. Yeah, you know you want to try it :P . If plans are to run anything more suited to plastic let me know & I'll toss the Big EZ in the truck.

252-326-4057

If I don't hear from anyone I'll be the lost looking one at the truckstop Saturday morning. Blue GMC with the Viper on the rack.

Gauley Mini Armada

Post by PAC »

Ok so I guess this is sort of turning out to be a mini Armada. 8) So remember KNEal’s rules..

“The C-boaters' Gauley weekend IS an advanced/expert paddlers' trip so MAKE SURE you have some background for this kind of paddling:
- technical/big water paddling requiring on-the-spot boat scouting,
- capable of following verbal instructions (or be willing to accept the penalties for missing the necessary moves )
- have reliable self-rescue skills
- have the appropriate paddling and rescue gear
- and MOST IMPORTANT willing to have a great time with some REALLY cool single bladers 8) ).”

The current plan is to paddle the Lower Gauley on Sat. (sorry Eric I know you like to miss the LG crowd on Sat.) and then maybe the NRG on Sunday (Eric?) for those interested in paddling Sun.

My plan is to come down late Friday night and stay thru Sunday camping Mountain Lake Campground - P.O. Box 486 Airport Road, Summersville, WV 26651 (304) 872-4220
The camp ground is just South of Summersville off of Route 19, turn west onto Airport Road (look for the “Summersville Lake – Summersville Airport” signs) and follow the signs to the campground (roughly 2 miles).
The first group there should pick the best available site (there should be a number of good sites available) and then we will meet up from there. I believe the cost is $14 for the site (with two people) and $10 per after that. We can square up after we all get there.
Place the name under Cboats (easy to remember) and your name (required).

Otherwise we (Big Al and I) will be at Mabel's Truck Stop located at Rt19 / 129 at roughly 9:00 to 9:30ish Sat. morning. Look for a mini van or red jeep Cherokee with a red open boat and a red Micro C1 on it! We get or plans square over cup of coffee – set up shuttles and then head off to the H20.

My Cell number is 412..310..6039 and Big Al’s is 412..401..5003 and both should be on all weekend.

Hopefully, Bernie, Eric, Mike and others can meet use there so we can get a pod of Cs out together. Or take interested parties to other runs.

CU in WV - Paul C.

PS: Mike bring both boats – just in case! CU there!

I'll get to the campground sometime Friday afternoon. I'm not sure if I'll get there in time to do the middle or not. If I'm not there, don't wait. Look for a blue GMC with a Viper on top. The tent is 6' tall, orange & white.

update on Gauley & New levels

Post by Mike W. »

I just broke my toe :x  but I'm still paddling.
This was posted on the Carolina Canoe Club board today:
The COE at Summersville Dam will cut back to 2,800 cfs during the day today and
will be holding at that until after the
Animal Upper Gauley Race on Monday. That means no cutting back late in the
afternoon - they will be releasing 2800 cfs 24 hours/day. Anyone paddling the
Lower Gauley won't have to wait for the water to get there. Of course all this
is subject to change, but that is the word from the Corp at this time

The COE is still releasing 30,000 cfs from Bluestone Dam. With the flow from the
Greenbrier that's about 12 feet at Fayette Station.
