Did the L'Edge kill the Detonator?

Post by ohioboater »

I never see Detonators around any more - has the L'Edge eliminated the market for the Detonator, or are people still buying them?

There are a number plastic boats in that size that are better overall and more durable. The detonator is slow and it wears badly.

My Detonator is only slow in flat water. I have not needed to weld it either :0 I think it is a fine river running canoe, especially for small technical streams

I stand corrected. The detonator is actually really fast and durable. I don't know why there aren't as many on the river.

Having made the transition from a detonator to a l'edge, I can tell the Detonator is much faster, and is a REALLY great boat.

I think you see less on the river because :
1. many ppl bought a l'edge (in fact, you see less different boats on the water, almost only l'edges...)
2. most ppl learn on a detonator, then switch for a zoom (or a l'edge).

I loved my Detonator. In fact thats why I wore it out thats all I paddled when I had mine. The boat was fast and caught eddies like a dream. I found it both great for creeks and big water runs. Yeah mine wore out, but I got it used and the boat current owner still loves with its many repairs.

So, despite the fact that some new plastic hulls (L'Edge, Option, Phiend. . .) are very popular, some old designs are still tried & true, and are snapped up on the used market: smbjs' Zoom, the aforementioned Detonator, the Ocoee, Viper 11, Outrage, Caption. . .

Their desirability is so solid, I'm wondering why (a.) Manufacturers aren't gearing up to make the switch to PE, or (b.) Manufacturers aren't buying up the rights to re-produce the boats in PE.

Jus' wonderin'!

RX & PE boats are made completely different... you couldn't make a PE boat in a RX mold or vice versa.

I'm sure the popularity of the l'Edge has hurt sales for a lot of different boats, including the Detonator.

But has it killed the Detonator? I don't think so. The Detonator is also a really good big water boat. Also, I know the l'Edge is too big and heavy for most of the ladies, but I know plenty of them who paddle or have paddled Detonators over the years...

If there was a thread asking which canoe is best at slicing bread the answer would likely come back as "the L'edge"

As good as it is, I don't think it's making other boats obsolete. L'edgemania will level out soon.
