Outrage Gunwales Need Replacing

Post by B_Neale »

I recently bought a used Outrage, and the previous owner did not treat his wood gunwales. So, they need replacing. I'm located in Atlanta, GA and would really appreciate any contacts/tips/helpful information about finding replacement gunwales. And yes, I know that Mad River offers replacement gunwales, I'm just trying to find a local (and hopefully cheaper) alternative for the time being.

Thanks!

You might consider Eds knock-down ash gunwales. If you do the jointing carefully, they should be as strong as continuous ash.

In a big town like ATL you should be able to find a specialty wood supplier or millwork shop that can get a long enough piece of ash for the job. If you have the tools and inclination, making them isn't too hard. If you find the wood at a millwork shop, they are set up to make them for you... I've had luck with both, but the last time I went to my favorite millwork shop, he said shipping was prohibitive because he wasn't ordering the quantities of specialty wood that he used to due to the construction industry downturn. Last I saw, they were closed...
