Nose clips are totally unnecessary for open boating.

The standard lame response for a gratuitous swim out of a kayak is "I didn't have my nose plugs on!"

The corollary for canoes is "I fell out of my outfitting!" or "My thigh strap pulled loose!" If one swims extremely frequently on a single run, then the problem is addressed by swearing at the manufacturer/previous owner of the craft, and vowing to "tear out all the outfitting and do it right this time."

Nose plugs, to a canoeist, are only a tertiary or quaternary lame excuses for a swim, and completely fungible given the range of potentially swim-inducing components of our chosen craft.

I’m not sure I follow your line of reasoning here. Yes, most any sport can cause injuries. That’s why equipment is made to minimize the associated risks. The logic behind PFD's is obvious. Helmets are a “no brainer”. Elbow pads protect our elbows. Nose clips protect the sinuses of those who need them. Not everyone needs a pacemaker, but they sure help those that do.

Heck, I’ve never even worn nose clips on the river, and I hope I never have to. I’m considering trying them for practice sessions; I think that’s what set me up for the problems I’m having now. If this gets worse or gets to be chronic in nature, then yeah I might try them on the river. However, if I do I’m going to a full face helmet. That way no one will have to look at my ugly mug- or my nose clips. Problem solved.

A blanket proclamation such as this, stated unequivocally and voicing its message as incontrovertible, fails to acknowledge the diversity of physiologies that comprise the human species and could therefore be viewed as exclusionary or as denoting a propensity for elitist tendencies toward a certain segment of the CBoating community who may have the misfortune of a less salubrious state of being in regards to nasal fortitude.

I often find that the knot comes loose on my nose plug tether... what knot should I be tying? Nose plugs are expensive!

Found another good knot. The buntline hitch is the same as the four-in-hand knot used for neckties, although it looks different.
