What do people think of this?

Decked Canoes, Open Canoes, as long as they're canoes!

What do people think of this?

Post by Alden »

First of all, let me try to make this post germane to this site:

So, yesterday I was using some ADHESIVE, including some EPOXY, on my ZEPHYR, when I realized my OUTFITTING was . . .

Okay. Now that I'm talking in a language you can all understand, an interesting post:

http://www.boatertalk.com/forum/BoaterTalk/1576143

Questions:

1) When the author says, "probably not a good idea," do you agree?
2) Why or why not?
3) Have you ever told someone, "It's a Prelude" and had them ask, "To what?" Has that ever happened to you?

Discuss . . .

You have a Zephyr? What adhesive is working for you? I'm thinking of redoing my outfitting, too.

Oh, and Will Lyons is a wuss.

Hey cut Will some slack - he is just feeling his mortality.

Older age, a desire to settle down get married, raise a pod of kiddies, sit on the couch eating chips while watch reality shows does that to some folks.

Next he'll be posting to sell off the fleet of cool performance boats while settling on one high volume (dare I type this...) kayak! Only to use it on sunny summer day LF runs on the class A stuff, wearing dry suits and skull caps and gloves.

Don't give him grief..... pity his wayward ways, pray to the might water gods to redeem his soul so that he might yet repent and errors of path he has taken.

Can I have an Ahem here bothers and sisters?

Oh and by the way.....

adhesive!!!!

Unfortunately I understand he has been toying around with the dark side. He makes some good points about discomfort but hey, we are all masochists here anyway, right@

Actually, it sounds more like "Cosmik" is fast tracking himself into qualifying for "Team Old Guy". Good job, Will! :D Too bad about the seduction of the dark side sucking you in. :(

PAC suggested we don't give him grief. Click on the link below to see my reaction:

I mock in jest mainly - he says kayaking is easier and he is running Linville Gorge... Well, I'm running the Nantahala and the Upper Green when I can eke out the time...

Kayaking is easier and everyone knows it. C1-ing is only better compared to open boating. Its just a matter of how much of a pain in the butt something has to be for you to personally enjoy it.

I took a K-1 out for a spin the other day myself, actually. Attaining Mather Gorge on the Potomac at 2.8 -- you have to do something different to keep entertained!

The purpose of this trip was mainly to witness the reported downtime my squirt boater friend had been getting up at Simple Pleasures. (He did NOT disappoint. While I was there he got two rides that were 50+ feet underwater.) But I will report that paddling K-1 up the gorge was decidedly less fun than paddling C-1 through there. What can I say? I just like the canoe better.

And I think Will was just trying to ward off those who might not be ready. I've tried for years to get people interested in C-1, but my defense of the (as a high school principal would say) "positive benefits" of the canoe has gone over about as well as a lead zeppelin. Those of you who have kids, or who work with kids will probably understand -- sometimes it makes a thing more intriguing if you try to dissuade others from doing it. Look at what John McCain did. It's the same with C-1ing. Will's post actually had such a powerful effect on me that I vowed to get into C-1ing, even going so far as buying a C-1 from a guy in my neighborhood named Davey.

It was only a few days later that my excitement cooled off and I realized that I have actually been paddling C-1 for eight years, already own seven of them, and have known Davey Hearn since 2002.

But I'm left with a new appreciation for reverse psychology.

That is all.

Congrats on the 400th - I think! However, I'm not sure if that is a good sign (too much time online and not enough paddling)!

Good point on the inverse thought process - or at least we all hope that is the case with Will. We'd hate to lose a paddler like him to the .... "other side"!

But I do notice that k boaters are wary of the C! Many of those who think they are studly enough to just "do it" often pay the price and eat that humble pie. Maybe Will is thinking its a ego safety issue - saving them from self abuse and ridicule of not being quite as studly as they think they were!

That worked with my son who wants my Acrobat to paddle! So I told him he is not good enough in a k yet and had to learn a C1 roll first. At the National Downrivers he worked with Mike W and has a pretty bomber C roll and is now working on a C hand roll (thanks Mike). He still has get his k surfing skills in place before he gets a go at the bat boat or a very cool C slalom boat that is ready for him. And I await the day when I see him drop and roam in the never relm!

You might be on to something. But we'll wait to hear from the OC2 Green guru himself! 8)

That's a good start, but, don't repeat my folly - focus on quality not quantity.

I used weldwood gel contact cement to attach new d-rings in my Zephry.
I use them to attach a Peli case that contains my DSLR.
They've held up really well.
ps.
When do you want to run the Upper Green?
I have a key....

Saturday, 11/22 is looking good... Was thinking about the WW park in Charlotte, but the scenery is not so good as the Green.

The contact cement is holding well enough to trust it with your camera? Huh. Interesting. I loves me some Weldwood but the only time I tried it on D-rings (on Royalex) ended in a swim...
