Trip Report / Instruction with Eli

Post by Atucky »

Just wanted to post a trip report from the weekend.

4 of us took a class with Eli Helbert on Saturday on the Nolichucky. There were 4 places where we had to portage over ice, and several places where we slid over smaller iced over sections. The level was around 1100, and with it just under 4k now, I can't help but wonder what all that water is doing to all that ice. I found out that rock spins are much better on royalex boats when the rock is covered in ice! Another interesting move Eli showed us is the "ice shelf spin", spinning over and over along a shelf of ice. See link below for some pics i took. Unfortunately there aren't too many.

Whatever your skill level is, if you're learning how to canoe, want to refine your skills, I recomend looking into instruction with Eli. I've hit a plateau in my boating, and he was able to show me several different things to focus on, that should help.

Just guessing that hours of roll practice/instruction was not on the agenda ;)

Very Cool, looks like something I may need this summer. WHEN IT IS WARM!!!!!

Icey Noli

Post by OC1er »

I was in the group that put on just in front of you guys. Wild day out there for sure! Pretty spooky feeling with all that overhanging ice on the banks and rocks. Twin Eddies was scary, a swim could've put you straight under that ice sheet! Made the Noli at 1000 straight up class IV if you ask me! Cool Pics!
Its not about the approach. Its about control in the hole.

Terrible pics. You've got a hot, red-headed chick in the group and we get TWO shots of Gilley Boaz' hiney? I love Gilley, and his boat is a whole lot prettier than Shannon's boat, but come on! No shots of Shannon's smile?

I was the only OC-1 in the group before them. I felt like a fur trapper in the 1700s. Nice Prophet in the pics, my Detonator was cold with that ice water coming over the bow. Very cool trip, but I hope not do a trip like that very soon.

My boat is pretty in its own way... it apparently just can't compare to Gilley's backside. :o

Boy I envy you a little but feel the cold. Good pics. I did four days with Eli this summer and it was time well spent. He is great.

Gumpy,

I'm enjoying that outrage. Great boat! The clinic w/ Eli was great. I hope to get out and work on a few things before ALF. let me know if/when you'll be down south. It would be great to boat with you this time around.
