it usually isn't too "merry" when i roll! combining a high brace sweep and a low brace roll is what i was trying to say i don't do. i'm going paddling soon so i'll see if i can get this out quickly.
i paddle left, if i was going over towards the right, i would tuck with my paddle's power face on my bow deck. to do that i put my t grip hand in my belly and my shaft hand up near my head (since it's tucked). so, my t grip hand thumb is still pointing left but the paddle is now out in front of me. once i'm over, i sweep out to a low brace position and hip snap. a flip to the left would be the same except for the set up, which isn't needed. just get the blade out to ninety degrees and hip snap! i'll take the camera and see if i can show it clearer.

In a canoe you don't just float down a river: you're part of it- a silent water creature responsive to every surge and flex of current, gliding like a fingertip over a naked green body. "The River Why" David James Duncan

I thought you kayaked?Smurfwarrior wrote:Can someone explain what a 'screw roll' is?
A screw is a kayak roll with a weak hip snap and finishing with a backward lean.
Canoe rolls rely on a strong snap which includes more of the upper body. I'd call Craig's roll a kayak roll since he's coming up on a high brace.

My shoulder hurts just thinking about a high brace roll in an OC-1... C-1, maybe... I heard Lugbill's roll described as "a monster forward stroke that started from under water" (or words to that effect).

Paddle Flip or No
I do both the Foote and Ford rolls, but I think of them as paddle flip versus no paddle flip.
The Ford roll is faster since there isn’t the pause to flip the paddle when it’s out to the side. If your flip timing is off the paddle will dive. It doesn’t need the setup like Coloradopaddler shows even when going over to your offside.
I try the Ford roll first, but if that doesn’t work I go to the Foote setup because I like the tighter tuck you get by reaching forward versus having the paddle in your gut.

That is the video that I have watched over and over and have been trying to emulate.Smurfwarrior wrote:Not sure if you can view this, its a FB vid but its got the clearest view I've yet to see.

Hi Folks,
Just a quick one. The scull out and flipping the paddle over is only a set up, there is no pressure during this phase. I sometimes go under back deck, sometimes knife the blade to the surface.
Also, the Zoom doesn't usually stall! In this instance there is no underwater scull, I just hang in there in the set position.
Kelvin.
P.s. It's not a good idea to set with the paddle on the deck with the T-grip in your belly, T-grip hits rock... etc.... etc.
